Love Is the Fulfillment of the Law

Romans 13:8-10

“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”

God’s laws show us how to love Him and how to love others. They express His way of life, which is a way of love. So if love is our motivation, we will be obeying and fulfilling God’s law.

Here the apostle Paul quotes five of the 10 Commandments to represent the whole list, especially the ones that show us how to love our neighbors.

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

(11) that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, (12) that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.     New King James Version

"Do we lead a quiet life, or are things always in turmoil? Do we live in peace, or is it in constant strife? If we are living in strife and turmoil, what are we doing to contribute to it?

Do we mind our own business, or are we busybodies and meddlers? Do we always want to know what the other person across the fence is doing? Do we always call up somebody for the latest news about what's going on over in this church or with that person and his problem?

Is our "helpfulness" really a guise for poking our nose in where we are not wanted? With some people it is. They serve in order to get the goods on others.

Do we work, or are we lazy? This does not mean just our physical labor for the food we put on our table. It could be spiritual work. It could be our service to one another. Do we work with our own hands, or are people always making allowances for us? Are we living off the goodness of another's heart? Some people think they are owed something. They are victims of circumstance, and so they want everybody to give to them, rather than working for it.

Do we show the same Christian character to our work buddies as we do to the people who sit beside us in church? Paul asks that here in terms of "walk[ing] properly toward those who are outside." Are our lives hypocritical? Do we put on our best character and slip into a chair at church just once each week? Do our acquaintances in the world see Christ in us, or do they see "Joe Six-Pack" who has downed a few too many six packs? Do they see someone who curses a blue streak six days a week, but one day a week, he is the soul of pleasant and wise speech? How do people in the world see us?

Lastly, Paul says, "I urge you that you may lack nothing." He does not mean, "Do we lack a pair of shoes, a new DVD player, or the latest PlayStation game?" What he means is, "Do we lack anything that makes us better Christians, or are we satisfied with ourselves where we stand?" Have we come into the church and accepted God's grace, and then say "Take me as I am, Lord, without one plea"? Or do we know that we lack some quality that would make us better Christians and strive to add it to our characters?" Are EGGS BAD For You? (Real Doctor Reveals The TRUTH)

“Are Eggs Good For You or Are Eggs Bad For You?

Do eggs cause heart disease, high cholesterol and clog your arteries? Everyone is questioning if eggs are good for you? Then later studies they say eggs are bad for you. Next week they say eggs are good for you. According to the newest article, from JAMA's cholesterol egg study, eggs are bad for you. Every week another food like eggs is switching from good to bad and back. The latest article from JAMA says eggs are bad because they give you high cholesterol and heart disease.

Eggs aren't the only food to have this type of confusion around if they are healthy or unhealthy, so Dr Ekberg explains in a way that you can understand and never be confused again no matter what the studies or experts say. Others are claiming it is an attack against low carb diets such as the ketogenic diet, but that doesn't matter. You will still know the truth after watching this video. Dr Ekberg explains what cholesterol is and does in the body and if eggs are truly bad for you. You will find out the truth about eggs and cholesterol and all about the cholesterol egg myth. Four Reasons Christmas Is Not a Christian Holiday

“Millions around the world celebrate Christmas every year. But is Christmas Christian? Read on to learn why Christmas is not a Christian holiday.

As millions of people around the world decorate trees, wrap and give gifts, and tell their children the story of Santa Claus—a fundamental question must be answered. Is Christmas really “Christian”?

Because of the attention paid to the story of Christ’s birth and the carols celebrating the baby Jesus, many may be shocked at this time of year to hear a Christian say:

“I don’t celebrate Christmas because it is not Christian to do so.”

There are people who object to Christmas because of its association with Christianity (some call this “the war on Christmas”). But it is not just non-Christians who object to Christmas. Many Christians do as well (including the author of this post!).

Why would a Christian—someone who strongly believes that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior—make a conscious decision to reject Christmas?”

________

Keeping Family When You Don't Keep Christmas

An old box of family photos.“What do you do when your relationship with God seems to collide with your relationship with your family?

kaboompics.com

Let’s be honest—saying no to Christmas feels like saying no to family, right? All of the intellectual knowledge about the true origins of Christmas doesn’t keep your heart from breaking when someone asks, “Don’t you want to be with your family?”

What do you do when your relationship with God seems to collide with your relationship with your family? Tell your family you’re giving up Christmas, and you’ll find out rather quickly.

Four years ago this Thanksgiving, I decided to stop keeping Christmas. I’d bought airline tickets months before to go home for the holidays, so I went. As best as I could, I tried not to acknowledge Christmas while still honoring everyone around me who was celebrating it. No one knew how to act, including me. It was awkward for all of us. When I was told that I didn't have to come home for Christmas the following year, it was both a relief and a punch in the gut.

Why does it sometimes feel wrong to say no to Christmas, even though you know you should? For many people, Christmas traditions are wrapped up in family. It’s often the family’s largest and most-anticipated gathering. Let’s be honest—saying no to Christmas feels like saying no to family, right? All of the intellectual knowledge about the true origins of Christmas doesn’t keep your heart from breaking when someone asks, “Don’t you want to be with your family?”

Learn more about the Feast days, and you'll see how very much family is on God's mind.

I couldn’t put it into words at the time, but the root of my struggle was, “How do I maintain relationship with my family and be true to my beliefs?” It is possible, and it doesn’t involve Christmas.

There are two points to consider. One, family relationships are about more than just a single day. And two, God has a bigger plan for family than you may realize.

How do you build a relationship with your family outside of trees, tinsel, and presents? Some people join their extended family for lunch or dinner and leave before gifts and other Christmas traditions, and that works well for them. I live many hours away from my family, so dropping in for dinner is not really practical. Since long-distance visits are usually for a few days at a time, I don't spend Christmas with my family. It's more respectful to them, so that they can observe the practices they enjoy without awkwardness, and I'm not caught in the middle of practices that I don’t want to keep. Instead, I spend that time with my Church family, because, frankly, it can be very lonely to un-keep Christmas all by yourself.

Throughout the year, I make a point to spend time with my family at other opportunities that are meaningful to all of us: Thanksgiving, birthdays, a summer family gathering, and other special events such as graduations and weddings. I make an effort to see them more often than before so they don't feel I'm pulling away from them. It's Christmas I've rejected, not them. You can keep the commandment to honor your parents and not keep their desire for Christmas.

You should be able to answer why you are choosing not to keep Christmas. My answer is, "God has spelled out His holidays in the Bible and how to keep them, so now I keep those instead."

God’s holidays, His holy festivals as described in Leviticus 23, illustrate the greatest story ever told—a story that features Jesus in the starring role. But His birth is only a small part of that story. Christmas misses most of the action and the dramatic conclusion. God has created special opportunities for you and your family to celebrate together throughout the year and remember the incredible story He is telling.

Learn more about the Feast days, and you'll see how very much family is on God's mind. God is all about family, and His days reveal more about the plan of salvation for all mankind than Christmas traditions ever could. Man’s holidays are a poor substitute for what God has in mind for you and your family: to be part of His family, together.

Do you want to start observing God's Feast days? Start by learning how Christians observe the biblical festivals.
Read "A Guide to God's Holy Days".

The first year is the hardest, but you’ll find a groove that works. You are not alone. While your journey is uniquely yours, there are many people who walk with you, all sorting out how to keep family without keeping Christmas.”   From: https://www.ucg.org/beyond-today/blogs/keeping-family-when-you-dont-keep-christmas?source=weeklyupdate

Honor God, Don't Keep Christmas

Honor God, Don't Keep Christmas

Wikimedia Commons/Malene Thyssen

“Honor God, Don't Keep Christmas

For several years after becoming aware of the pagan associations, I still thought it was okay to keep Christmas. My intentions were good. I wanted to honor Christ. But is having good intentions good enough?

After studying Scripture, I came to realize that celebrating a day rooted in ancient paganism, no matter how pure my intentions were, was an insult to God.

One of my favorite scriptures is Deuteronomy 12:32. “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it” (Deuteronomy 12:32).

Also consider two other scriptures. “You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you” (Deuteronomy 4:2). “Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:6).

In Jeremiah, God tells us not to learn the customs of others. He calls them “worthless.” “Do not learn the ways of the nations…for the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.  They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter” (Jeremiah 10:1-4, New International Version).

Man made Christmas, not God.  Let’s honor God by not associating ourselves with Christmas.”  From: https://www.ucg.org/beyond-today/blogs/honor-god-dont-keep-christmas

Pray With a Psalm in Your Heart. Private Prayers. Avoiding Vain Repetitions in Prayer. New Study Links Keto Diet to Severe Long-Term Health Risks.

Point of Wisdom, Pray With a Psalm in Your Heart

"It can sometimes be hard to know what to talk about with God in prayer. Some Scripture-based counsel to a struggling individual can help you too.

He described himself to the pastor and me as a former hippie who had been off the drugs for several years. But he and his wife explained that the hallucinogens' effects were still badly slowing his mental processes. We could see that from our conversation. My part was as a ministerial trainee participating in this pastoral visit with a young couple who had lived hard and wild during the hippie movement years of the 1960s.

The man now loaded freight on ships in the Thames River near London. He had muscles for the work but wished that he still had the muscle in his mind. She had many questions about the Bible and God's way, but one main question plagued his thoughts: "How do I pray? I can't think of much to say." There were tears in his eyes. He really, truly wanted to know how to talk to God.

As the novice on the job, I mentally scrambled for the scriptures that might provide him understanding. The so-called "Lord's Prayer" (in Matthew 6:9-13) came to mind. Jesus' outline for prayer.  It came to the pastor's mind too. He explained that it was actually a prayer outline—not a script for brief recitation. It included an introduction and conclusion of praise for God, requests for God's intervention in world affairs, requests for our daily needs, asking God in repentance for forgiveness of sins as we forgive others, help against temptation and evil—and at least two requests for God's Kingdom to come (which it will at Christ's return).

The pastor continued that when you break Jesus' prayer outline down like that and go into detail concerning each part, you could easily be on your knees for 30 minutes or more. "Half an hour? I can't think of anything to pray about for more than five minutes!" Overwhelmed, the fellow leaned forward shaking his head in his hands. It was a genuine heartstrings-pulling moment—and I was thankful that I wasn't leading the counseling. Amazingly, the pastor proceeded to unfold a point of wisdom involving two steps that has stuck with me ever since.

Go with a list and a psalm

Step 1: Make a list of things you know you want to pray about—however long or short. Take that list and your Bible to where you pray. Talk to God about every item on the list. When you're all prayed out, then go to step 2.

Step 2: Open your Bible to the book of Psalms, a very large part of which was written by King David of ancient Israel. Under God's inspiration David wrote his psalms first as prayers, then as songs. Pick a psalm and tell God in your prayer that you've personally run out of things to say to Him, but that now you want to read to Him this psalm that David wrote as your prayer too—thinking about how it applies to your own life. You can be sure that God will accept your borrowed prayer, because David was a man after God's own heart (see Acts 13:22).

The pastor provided a list of some of David's psalms that applied to circumstances any of us might face.

Need encouragement? Read Psalm 37.

Need comfort? Read Psalm 23.

Need to repent? Read Psalm 51.

In trouble and desperately need God's help? Read Psalms 3 to 7 (plus many more).

Want to thank God for His blessings? Read Psalm 30.

Feel lost, lonely and forgotten? Read Psalm 13.

Need spiritual strength? Read Psalm 11.

The tears in the young man's eyes disappeared. He had hope—he could learn to pray by praying David's prayers. He could draw close to God. So can you."  From: https://www.ucg.org/vertical-thought/point-of-wisdom-pray-with-a-psalm-in-your-heart

_______

Private Prayers

Matthew 6:5-6

“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

"In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ laid out the foundations of Christianity; and in this section He addresses the wrong and right ways to pray. Prayer is not for show or to impress other people. It is designed to help us build a personal relationship with our Creator. The core of our prayer life is one-on-one, alone with God. When we pray in private, we can express our deepest emotions and be open with God in a way we could not be in public.

The example of the New Testament Church shows that this does not mean that there is no place for public prayer, as there are many examples of the Church of God praying together (Acts 1:14; 4:24-31; etc.). But we must always be on guard against the attitude of hypocrisy that Jesus warned about.

For more about what the Bible teaches about prayer, see our article “How to Talk to God.”"

_______

Avoiding Vain Repetitions in Prayer

Matthew 6:7

“And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.”

"God does not give us prayers to memorize and repeat mindlessly as a ritual. He is not interested in babble and hearing certain syllables intoned repetitiously, as it seems the pagans believed their “gods” did. He wants His followers to “avoid meaningless, repetitive prayers offered under the misconception that mere length will make prayers efficacious” (Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary on Matthew 6:7-8).

God is interested in us having an actual conversation with Him, listening to what He says in the Bible and sharing our thoughts, requests, cares and praise with Him in a focused and meaningful way. Repeating someone else’s words over and over again can’t help but become rote and ritual rather than building the relationship God desires.

See more about the communication God desires in our article “How to Pray.”

New Study Links Keto Diet to Severe Long-Term Health Risks

description

  • “The negative long-term consequences of ketogenic diets may far outweigh any potential short-term benefits, according to a comprehensive new review published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

Keto diets have skyrocketed in popularity over the last decade due to their ability to promote quick weight loss. Typically very low in carbohydrates, modest in protein, and high in fats, the aim of keto diets is to push the body into ketosis—the state in which the body uses fat for fuel. Foods like red meat, fish, nuts, cream, eggs, cheese, oil, and non-starchy vegetables are given the green light while starchy vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, and lentils are avoided as much as possible.

For this latest meta-analysis, a group of physicians, researchers, and registered dietitians analyzed more than 100 peer-reviewed studies on keto diets to identify long-term effects. They found that people who follow such diets have a significantly increased risk of developing heart disease, LDL cholesterol buildup, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer. They also discovered that keto diets are particularly dangerous for people who are currently pregnant or may become pregnant. Low-carbohydrate diets are linked to birth defects, particularly neural tube defects, and gestational diabetes even if the pregnant person is taking folic acid supplements. Additionally, for those living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the high amounts of protein consumed on the keto diet can place excess stress on the kidneys and worsen the long-term internal damage of CKD.

So why does this diet have such negative side effects? The study’s authors suggest that it has to do with the nutrient quality of the food being eaten.

“The foods that are emphasized on a keto diet are the very products that cause colon cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease,” says study co-author Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and an adjunct professor of medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine. “New research also shows that these same foods raise the risk for severe COVID-19.”

This sentiment is echoed by lead review author Lee Crosby, RD. “The typical keto diet is a disease-promoting disaster,” says Crosby. “Loading up on red meat, processed meat, and saturated fat and restricting carbohydrate-rich vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains is a recipe for bad health.”

Originally developed in the 1920s as a treatment for patients with severe drug-resistant epilepsy, the keto diet has been shown to be effective for reducing seizures in extreme cases. Scientists believe the diet decreases seizures by making less glucose available to fuel neurons. And although the study authors concluded that eating keto could be beneficial for seizure management, they say the risks far outweigh the rewards for most  people.

Instead of going keto, Barnard suggests a whole food, plant-based diet: “On a low-calorie diet, people might lose weight, but they have to go hungry to do it. On a keto diet, they might lose weight but they feel guilty if they have an apple, banana, slice of bread, or a cookie. On a plant-based diet, you get the best of all worlds: weight loss, delicious food, better overall health, and you’re never hungry.”

4 Things You Need to Know About the Feast of Pentecost. Bombs Falling on Israel. CANCER: It's What's For Dinner.

.

4 Things You Need to Know About the Feast of Pentecost

4 Things You Need to Know About the Feast of Pentecost“Pentecost is familiar to some because of the events of Acts 2. But is there more to this day than those events? What do you need to know about Pentecost?

On May 16, a relatively small group of Christians around the world will gather to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost.

This is a unique festival because some churches that don’t observe any of the other festivals of God found in the Bible do celebrate Pentecost in some form. (Catholics and Protestants will celebrate it May 23, and the Eastern Orthodox will observe it June 20.) There is even a denomination of Christianity that has named itself “Pentecostal” after this festival.

Of course, this is due to the events that occurred on Pentecost in Acts 2. On that momentous day, we read about the founding of the New Testament Church, the gift of tongues, the giving of the Holy Spirit, Peter’s powerful sermon and the baptism of 3,000 people.

Many read about these miraculous events and realize there’s something special about the Day of Pentecost. That’s why many churches celebrate it in one form or another.

But how much do you know about this special day? What should you know about the Feast of Pentecost? Is it a day you should mark on your calendar and observe? Is it more than just the anniversary of significant events in the history of the Christian church?

Here are four things every Christian should know about the Feast of Pentecost.

1. Pentecost is the third of God’s seven annual festivals.

While it is commendable that some churches recognize and celebrate this festival, Pentecost is not a stand-alone observance. This day is actually the third of a set of seven festivals God revealed in the Old Testament.

In Leviticus 23, those festivals are revealed together and in order. God introduced this list by declaring the days to be “the feasts of the LORD” (verse 2). The observance we refer to as Pentecost is found sandwiched in the middle of the “feasts of the LORD” list (in verses 15-21).

Pentecost is preceded by two festivals that occur in the spring in the northern hemisphere (the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread) and is followed by four festivals that occur in the early fall (the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, the Feast of Tabernacles and the Eighth Day).

These seven festivals stand as a complete package. We can’t pick just one to celebrate and ignore all the rest. If these festivals are holy and commanded by God, then we must observe all of them.

There’s a reason that the apostles and members of the early Church were observing the Feast of Pentecost in Acts 2. It is because they observed all of “the feasts of the LORD.” The scriptural evidence shows that these special feast days were observed by Jesus and His early followers.

That begs the question: If Jesus and His early followers observed these seven festivals, shouldn’t we today? To begin to answer that question, read our article “Biblical Festivals: Does God Want Us to Celebrate Them?

2. Pentecost has multiple names in the Bible.           Continued at: https://lifehopeandtruth.com/life/blog/4-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-feast-of-pentecost/?

Bombs Falling on Israel

“Rockets are again falling on cities in the state of Israel. Palestinian Hamas terrorists are launching bombs out of Gaza against Israeli cities. Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist group dedicated to the overthrow of the Jewish nation, is seeking to gain political advantage among the various Arab factions which control the narrative of decades of conflict. Innocent Arabs and Israelis are the victims.

Happening during the month of Ramadan, this conflict arose over a minor matter in a section of East Jerusalem called the Sheikh Jarrah district—a predominantly Palestinian neighborhood. Four Arab tenants decided they did not want to pay rent on housing legally owned by Jewish citizens, and were sent notice of eviction. Never wanting to let an opportunity pass, Hamas seized the opportunity to inflame Arab passions and the matter has escalated.

Rockets falling on cities in Israel is always a serious situation. Israeli Defense Force troops moving on the ground against Arabs can create unintended consequences. Politician's posture and shaky alliances are strained. The past years have seen unprecedented alliances between Israel and Arabs states. The influence of Palestinian leaders has been eclipsed in some cases and this latest explosion may be an effort to restate the narrative in the old language of conflict.

Rockets falling on Israel is not something to take lightly. Though it has been common in the past, and usually ends without major conflict, there is always the prospect of a larger war erupting. Only the hard-core terror states, such as Iran, desires such a conflict. But the neighborhood of the Middle East is volatile and unpredictable. Peace is always tenuous, a fragile hope. More dreams have been broken by dark forces always lurking in the background.

When conflict erupts over Jerusalem, I am reminded of Christ’s prophetic words in Luke 21:20. “And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.” I don’t think this current conflict is the one spoken of here. However, it always makes me think about how this event will happen given modern technology and warfare.

Today’s powerful rockets carry more destructive firepower than a large ancient army. The thousands of Roman legions that surrounded Jerusalem in 69 A.D. are but a fraction of the power of a group of modern rockets aimed by hostile forces at the city today. Israel has their Iron Dome technology to shoot down incoming rockets, which is about 90 percent effective. But the debris and shrapnel still rains down, even from destroyed, incoming rockets. In this conflict the Arabs have concentrated their attack, overwhelming Israeli capacity to shoot down every missile. What would happen should several forces concentrate their firepower on Israel’s cities and cause serious damage?

We should pay attention to what happens in Jerusalem and the Middle East. It is the future scene of age-ending conflict before the return of Jesus Christ. Our booklet, The Middle East in Bible Prophecy, shows the history and future of the region. Now might be a good time to learn more. What happens in this critical world region has implications for Bible prophecy.” From: https://us1.campaign-archive.com/?e=72c729d811&u=1d04480cefc2e7c4492fe4a04&id=8bd365447a

Where Does Racism Come From? Racist Thoughts and Feelings? Bruce Lee. Update.

For “Scripture Sunday”:

Where Does Racism Come From?

Racism does not come from a system of economics that supports slavery, or from societal structures that support class distinctions. Like all evil, it originates with Satan and embeds itself within the heart of mankind.

A crowd of people.Timon Studler/Unsplash

Racism has been and will continue to be a scourge on mankind. To eradicate it, this ingrained and evil way of thinking needs to be cleansed from man’s heart.

Perhaps at no time in modern memory did the evil of racism manifest itself worse than in Nazi Germany’s “Final Solution.” After Hitler and the Nazis came to power in 1933, Aryan racial superiority became German government ideology. Such racist thought culminated in the deaths of some six million Jews.

More recently, “ethnic cleansing” became the term used to describe the racially motivated slaughter of population segments considered inferior. This was the case in Bosnia and Rwanda in the 1990s and in other human tragedies since. Today in America, racism explodes in violent street clashes in cities like Ferguson, Missouri, and Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Bible is clear: The evil of racism comes out of the heart of man.

Racist thought and racially motivated hatred is deeply rooted in mankind’s psyche. As defined by Merriam Webster, racism is “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.”

Where does racism come from? Like all evil that men do, it comes from the heart of man. Christ said, “Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matthew15:19).

Racism does not come from a system of economics that supports slavery, such as in the days of the Roman Empire or in early American history. It does not originate from societal structures that support class distinctions. These things have perpetuated racism, but they are not where racism comes from. The Bible is clear: The evil of racism comes out of the heart of man.

An attitude like racism was even addressed in the New Testament Church. Here, the apostle James warns the believers not to “hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality” (James 2:1). The word “partiality” seems less serious than racism, but it means nearly the same thing. Partiality means showing favoritism, or “respect of persons”—that is, thinking one person is better than another due social class, wealth or race.

If the believers were doing this, James asks them, “Have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?” (James 2:4). God will have no part of such thinking, for Scripture says, “There is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:11).

The Bible says, “God created man in His own image” (Genesis 1:27), which includes men and women of all races. Further, it says, God “made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth” (Acts 1:26).

If we treat a person with contempt for their race, religion, social status or any other reason, we have “become judges with evil thoughts.” Harboring such thoughts in the heart is to hate another person made in the image of God. Scripture says, “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer” (1 John 3:15).

Such evil in man’s heart—evil like racism—influences all his attempts to justify his supposed superiority on his brother. According to God’s Word, this is a spirit of murder.

Racism has been and will continue to be a scourge on mankind. To eradicate it, this ingrained and evil way of thinking needs to be cleansed from man’s heart. Thanks to God and His mercies, there is such a plan in the works. To anyone who draws near to God in true repentance and cleanses himself from such evil, God will draw near to him and purify his heart (James 4:8).

When God brings His Kingdom to earth, racism and all evil in man’s heart will be eradicated. God will show mankind a better way: “I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them” (Hebrews10:16). The heart of man will be cleansed of the evil that comes from it, thus ending the scourge of racism forever.”  From: https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/bible-questions-and-answers/where-does-racism-come-from

How Do I Overcome Racist Thoughts and Feelings?

“Overcoming racist thoughts and feelings requires a change of mind and seeing all people as God sees them—as made in His image, with the same glorious future potential of eternal life.

Overcoming racist thoughts and feelings requires a change of mind and seeing all people as God sees them—as made in His image, with the same glorious future potential to be in His eternal family.

Racism is one of the most hotly debated and discussed topics of the past several years, with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, consistent news coverage and analysis, college classes focused entirely on the topic and large-scale societal discussions of repatriation, restitution and equity.

While there have been a lot of discussion revolving around this topic, a definition of what constitutes racism has proven difficult to nail down. In its simplest form, when a person looks at individuals of another race or culture as inferior to themselves in some way based purely on the color of their skin and not the content of their character, then by definition that person has exhibited racist thoughts and feelings.

Overcoming racist thoughts and feelings requires a change of mind and seeing all people as God sees them—as made in His image, with the same glorious future potential to be in His eternal family.

The apostle Paul makes the point that when it comes to spiritual inheritance, gender, social class and race make no difference. God sees all of his creation as potential children in His family. If a person is baptized in Christ and receives God’s Holy Spirit through the process we see outlined in scripture, and if that individual yields themselves to God’s Holy Spirit, allowing it to lead them, then they are heirs of the promise, the very children of God (Galatians 3:28, Romans 8:14).

It doesn’t matter if they are black or white. It doesn’t matter if they are poor or well-off, it doesn’t matter if they are male or female. The presence of God’s Holy Spirit within them unifies them as one body in Christ Jesus (Romans 12).

As a result of this—when we pass judgment on someone else because of the color of their skin, we exhibit partiality, which is sin (James 2:9). We must repent of that sin and bring ourselves in line with God’s own viewpoint on the topic of race outlined in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Repentance comes from the Greek word, metanoeó,  meaning “to change one’s mind.” As Christians we are all striving to change our minds and put on the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). We must pray to God and ask for repentance from a great number of things, but if we are specifically struggling with racist thoughts and feelings, praying to God earnestly to change our mind and help us to see the potential in all of mankind is essential.

Our great God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34-35). He shows no partiality, calling people of every race and land (Acts 17:26-27). We must repent and believe in the Gospel of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:15) and work to bring every thought into captivity (2 Corinthians 10:5) as we mature to the full measure of the stature of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:13).”  From: https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/bible-questions-and-answers/how-do-i-overcome-racist-thoughts-and-feelings

Never Growing Faint

An Amazing Fact: “Bruce Lee, a martial artist and film star who lived from 1940 to 1973, was said to be one of the strongest and fastest men alive at the time. Among his amazing feats was his ability to strike an object from three feet away in only .05 of a second. He could reportedly do push-ups using only his thumbs.

Bruce Lee was not a very big man, but he was very powerful. Not only were his physical achievements unparalleled, but his charisma made him very attractive as well. He was a very influential actor too, popularizing the martial arts movie genre for the Western audience. He was thoroughly dedicated to his physical and artistic work.

On July 20, 1973, however, Lee died. He was reportedly not feeling well earlier in the day, and the official cause of death was labeled a cerebral edema caused by a reaction to a medication he had taken for a headache. In the end, his strength and power could not stop excess fluid from building up in his brain.

God, on the other hand, has limitless power and strength. The Bible says that He never grows faint or weary. His strength never subsides, and He never gets tired or needs to rest. He holds the same power today as He did when He created the Earth and all that is in it. He will never die or decay. He will reign throughout eternity with unfathomable power.

Though God is the only one with inherent immortality, He imparts that immortality to us as a free gift. From our position of sin and mortality, we can only imagine bodies that do not grow weary and strength that never fades. But the Bible promises that, when we trust in the Lord and wait on Him, we will “run and not be weary” and will “walk and not faint.” Because of Christ’s sacrifice for us, we can look forward to life without end with strength and power that rivals and exceeds even the most amazing feats demonstrated by Bruce Lee during his life.

Update.

Another week where not much has been going on, mostly because of the really cold weather and my back still isn’t any better.  Zack, Jay and I did work in the mini-house one morning when it wasn’t too cold, but we still had to run the heat in there.  We took the fancy light out of my bathroom and re-installed one of the original ones in there, then Zack painted the metal part of the fancy one bright gold to match the fixtures in the mini-house.  The glass is the same color as the vanity top, a shell-color, so that is why I wanted it in there.  When it was dry Jay installed it.

One night it went down to 20, and fortunately I didn’t have any broken pipes.  The icy snow stayed on the roofs for two days, and the melting ice made lots of pine needles fall to decorate the pathways, so we raked them up, as they can be slippery.  We had several hours of the power going out for a few seconds every 10 minutes.  Just as I was going to hit send, off it went again!  I am grateful that it came back on, though, because for so many homes, it didn’t.

My lovely lilac-point Siamese foster cat hasn’t had any more seizures, so I am hoping that she can go to a loving home after all.  It is still a mystery if she was allergic to her vaccinations or something like a fall.  She is so loving, sweet and plays so gently.

Another week of no meat, and I don’t miss it at all. “The fat you eat, is the fat that you wear”, and I have got to disrobe some more fat, even though I am gradually losing it!  I have several crockpots, different sizes, and each day I usually put one on.  You can just chuck sweet potatoes, potatoes, rice, quinoa, beans, oatmeal, buckwheat, or most food in there and it will be cooked by the time you are ready to eat, or save for another meal.  Just wash the veggies, don’t dry, and plop them in there.  I have done tomatoes and apples in the same pot and they turned out great, just add whatever seasonings you desire.  So there is always plenty of cooked food, cereal and fruit in my fridge, and I can eat as many starches as I want, (with in reason), but NO FAT, and especially no animal fat.

My doctor ordered an xray of my back.  The following day I want to the chiropractor again, and he told me that my spine would never get better, it is worn out.  All those years of having to move stuff and do stuff on my own has made the edges of my vertebrae rough, stress fractures and “Acquired Spondylolisthesis”.

What Is Spondylolisthesis?  The word spondylolisthesis derives from two parts - spondylo which means spine, and listhesis which means slippage. So, a spondylolisthesis is a forward slip of one vertebra (i.e., one of the 33 bones of the spinal column) relative to another. Spondylolisthesis usually occurs towards the base of your spine in the lumbar area.

So that is why the chiropractors were having trouble getting my back put back in.  Well, I knew it was out and I could feel that it was more of a front to back, than a side to side, misalignment.  My doctor prescribed two meds, one was steroids which would only give temporary relief, so I didn’t even pick it up, and the other was a muscle relaxer, not Motrin. I took half a dose of that, but I woke up in the night hardly able to get my breath my mouth was so dry, I was itching, and I felt terrible all the next day, so no more of that chemical for me!  Why do doctors prescribe stuff that has so many side effects?

As I wasn’t feeling so well after that medicine, I didn’t cook anything for the church potluck.  I had two containers of Ground Beef Stew and Veggies in my freezer, so I defrosted them and put them in my “carrying-crockpot” (the one with the locking lid) and that was about all I could carry to the car, my back felt so bad.

The bad freeze broke a water pipe at the church, so the pastor’s wife called to ask me to bring any jugs of water that I might have, as they had to turn the water off.  I have lots of water in one, two and five gallon jugs, but I just couldn’t go unlock the greenhouse and carry them all the way to the car.  I felt so bad not being able to do my part, but they had pulled up some water in big pots for kitchen use, and turned it on once in a while to flush the toilets, so we managed.

The Bible readings were Exo. 6:2-9:35 (Let my people go),  Eze. 28:25-29:21 and Eph. 2:1-10 and the Teaching was about ‘You Can’t Do Anything Your Way”!  We think we can, but if you don’t stick to the rules, you become unstuck.  Just think how great it would be if people only obeyed a couple of the commandments, like “Do not lie”, and “Do not steal”?

What a change in the weather, it was a 70 degree day.

Memorials to Peace, Not War

“When properly understood in the context of all Scripture, the biblical Holy Days show the way to true and lasting peace.

Soldier and Sailors Monument

Soldier and Sailors Monument
Indiana Division of Historic Preservation
and Archaeology

“In my town, Indianapolis, Indiana, the centerpiece of the city is a monument to the soldiers of three conflicts in the 19th century. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument is a beautiful, ornate, German-designed structure, the first one, it is said, to honor the common soldier. This memorial is only one of many in our city. In fact, Indianapolis boasts more war memorials than any other American city outside of Washington, D.C.

All over the world towns of all sizes hold some type of monument to their dead from wars past. I have seen them in tiny Czech, Italian and French villages on some of my travels. I have seen a picture of my own great-grandfathers, veterans of the American Civil War, standing in front of a newly dedicated war memorial in their hometown in Georgia. It is good that people remember those who died in war. It would be even better if nations would learn the lessons that can prevent conflict from igniting into larger wars, consuming millions of lives.

I have never counted, but I think it is safe to say that war memorials outnumber memorials to peace. One of the most famous peace statues stands outside the United Nations building in New York City. It depicts the millennial scene from Isaiah 2:4 with a man beating his sword of war into a plowshare of peace. Most would agree, what a wonderful world that would be!

In America we have two days set aside each year to remember the human cost of all our wars. Veterans Day on Nov. 11 springs from the day the Great War, World War I, came to a close. Memorial Day each May remembers the fallen from all the wars. Other countries have set aside days to remember fallen soldiers. But how many days on our calendar actually commemorate and raise a memorial to peace?

God shows us in His Word, the Bible, several days set aside to teach, honor and show the way to peace among all the families of the earth. Leviticus 23:2 calls them “the feasts of the Lord.” Seven annual festivals are listed in this chapter with seven “holy convocations,” or Holy Days, when the people of God are to assemble and worship.

These little-understood days are the only ones mentioned in the Bible as days to be kept by the faithful who seek to support the Prince of Peace—Jesus Christ (Isaiah 9:6). (Christmas and Easter, while commonly assumed to be biblical holidays, aren’t part of the Holy Days God commanded.) When properly understood in the context of all Scripture, the biblical Holy Days show the way to true and lasting peace.

As you read these words, many thousands of people in all parts of the world are focusing on the true worship of God on these days. The biblical Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles and Last Great Day are rich with meaning about key events yet ahead in the world. A full explanation of these days is available in our free booklet, God’s Holy Day Plan—The Promise of Hope for All Mankind.

These Holy Days herald a time of peace at the return of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. They give a vision of hope for a time when the source of evil will be banished and the way to peace among nations will be taught. Their message shows the depth of the love of God, and the opportunity all will have to accept the saving grace of Christ. As the subject of one of this month’s articles says, we need to pray, “Thy kingdom come.”

You need to understand the days God commands the entire world to observe as memorials to the way of life taught in the Scriptures. They are the days that show the sequence of events in God’s master plan for restoring all things through Jesus Christ. And when that occurs, it will indeed be a wonderful day!”  From: https://www.ucg.org/world-news-and-prophecy/restoration-memorials-to-peace-not-war

Another kind of battle:

God vs. Satan

“An epic battle has been going on between God and a powerful, evil spirit, Satan the devil. How did it begin? How will the battle of God vs. Satan end?

Chess pieces; God vs. Satan.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Although we are only given small glimpses of the world prior to man, the Scriptures tell us that during this time Lucifer, one of the high-ranking angels serving before God’s throne, convinced a third of the angels to follow him in rebellion against God (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:13-16; Revelation 12:7-9).

Apparently, because of this great battle, the beautiful earth God had created (Isaiah 45:18) became “without form, and void” (Genesis 1:2).  Because of Lucifer’s rebellion, his name was changed to Satan, meaning “adversary.” His followers, fallen angels, became known as demons.

After refashioning the earth so it could sustain human life, God created the first man, Adam. Eve, the first woman, was created a short time later. In addition to placing them in the Garden of Eden, where they could live and multiply, God gave them instruction in the way of life that would lead to happiness and eternal life.

But this couple was also given the choice of whether they would obey their Creator or choose their own path. God gave Adam and Eve the first opportunity to rule when He put all things under the feet of man, giving him dominion over the works of God’s hand (Psalm 8:4-8).

Satan attacks mankind

Though largely banished to earth with only a few exceptions when he could appear before God’s throne (Job 1:6), Satan and his demons were not ready to concede in their fight against God. Satan the devil soon brought the battle to the Garden of Eden.

Satan convinced the first man and his wife to disregard the instruction and commandments of God. They bought the lie that man can choose for himself what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is evil. As a result of this tragic decision, sin entered the world and death entered by sin. Man cut himself off from the guidance, direction and blessings of God.

From mankind’s perspective, this began the battle of light vs. darkness, right vs. wrong, evil vs. good. Sides were drawn. Camps and philosophies were developed.”

Banning the Mention of God in Public Life

image“More and more, God is being shunted aside and banned in the public arena—particularly from schools.

In November 2012, a six-year-old girl was told by her North Carolina school that, during a Veteran’s Day program, she could not say the word God in reading a poem that honored her two grandfathers. “He prayed to God for peace, he prayed to God for strength,” the poem stated (Todd Starnes, God-less America, 2014, pp. 128-129).

School officials in southern Florida “banned a fifth grader from reading the Bible during ‘free reading’ time” (Breitbart.com, “FL Teacher Banned Bible From ‘Free Reading’ Time in Classroom,” May 5, 2014).

The Good News November - December 2014

Good News Magazine: November - December 2014

Meanwhile, officials at other schools are on the alert to make sure that Gideons International does not succeed in—horror of horrors!—passing out free Bibles to students at school.

An e-mail memo from the assistant principal of a New Jersey middle school stated: “It has been brought to the administration’s attention that Gideons may be near our campus to distribute literature to our students … Please make sure they DO NOT step foot onto our campus at anytime. There will be added police and security presence at dismissal” (quoted by Starnes, p. 116, emphasis added). Apparently some school administrators think distributing Bibles is the big danger in America’s public schools today—to the point that police must be called in to prevent it!

In 2012, national Democratic Party leaders removed references to God from their party’s platform at their national convention. But this wasn’t popular with everyone, and as it was shown on primetime TV nationwide, a move was made to put God back in—at which point many on the convention floor shockingly booed. Yes, booed God —or at least the prospect of God having anything to do with decisions in governing the nation! How far this country has fallen from the days of the Founding Fathers.

Nationally syndicated radio host Steve Deace comments: “This ‘New Left’ is not mere liberals. They are flat-out Leftists … They are Social Reconstructionists, whose goal is to empower government to replace our Judeo-Christian ideals of liberty and morality with what amounts to Cultural Marxism … That’s why their ultimate goal is silencing the church … For the church says that God alone is God, and government is not.

“Not to mention with God out of the way, so are your God-given rights, which makes you a de facto ward of the state and not a free person. As [noted author G.K.] Chesterton once said [paraphrased], ‘Whenever the government removes the god, the government then becomes the god’ ” (“The Left Officially Declares War on God,” Townhall.com, July 13, 2014).”  From: https://www.ucg.org/the-good-news/banning-the-mention-of-god-in-public-life

Update.

Roy hasn’t been around, so the wall in the mini-house isn’t finished yet.  Zack and I have been getting ready for my foster kittens coming home from the SPCA Habitat at Petco for Thanksgiving.  The Habitat is closed for over a week to give the volunteers, and kittens, a rest.

We don’t know how many of the four kittens will be still be un-adopted by then. They are a bit older and bigger now so I can’t just leave them locked up in cages.  They need to learn “House Etiquette”, too.  Like not getting on tables or countertops.   We have been “kitten-proofing” my grooming room so they can play in there most of the time.  It hasn’t been a grooming room for a long time, it is now my mail room where I pack and ship items sold on eBay.  We put all my packing materials, shipping stuff, and mailing envelopes in the box that my new sink came in, and stored it underneath out of the way.  They would have had a field day with all that bubble wrap, etc.

We clamped a big piece of cardboard over the shelf where I keep the pet medicines. and put walls of cardboard so they couldn’t get behind the furniture.  I am advertising a wire 2’ x 3’ dog cage for Hans, so he is going to bring it up here so I can store some of my items for sale in it, so they can’t get to them.  I already have one dog cage full of items for sale.

Tux3 Kitten Habitat 2017There are only two cages set up in my dog room for the kitten’s nightime, so I hope they haven’t grown too much and that there won’t be more than two kittens.  Ming was adopted and Laila has a good ap on her, so it should just leave Tux and Marble.  Marble had an ap on her, but they got a kitten from another rescue because it was cheaper.  They don’t know what they missed.  I am really looking forward to having Tux back here.  He is the sweetest, loving little guy.  He would wiggle his way into my kitchen, and Puddin’ didn’t growl at him, so I am hoping that he will be a great playmate for her.  She wants me to play with her all the time, but I am sorry, I have to work.

Zach said he likes to vacuum, so I drug out the big heavy vacuum, (I usually use the lighter one since my surgery) The big one really sucks, it would suck the tits off a boar hog!  We were really ambitious and moved the couch and other furniture, and gave the living room a good clean.  The following morning, we shampooed the living room carpet, and even vacuumed and shampooed the carpet in my bedroom.  My daughter says her hardwood floors are easier to clean, but I like my bedroom carpeted.

DSCF1853-001As I had taken pictures of some of the cottage/birdcage decor items that my daughter had brought me, and I had listed them for sale, so Zack and I packed them up in boxes and moved them out of the storage tent into the greenhouse. There is no telling when they will sell, and they could get moldy in the tent if we get another downpour.  Fortunately, I have a good stock of all sizes of boxes.  I still have more of her items to sort out, and I need to spend some time in the tent and unpack all the boxes that she brought.

One evening Hans took me to a ‘dinner’ at the church around the corner.  It was mostly processed food, something our church rarely serves.  Boxed macaroni and cheese, canned corn, canned ravioli, some prepared chicken chipolte, and really sticky-looking cake.  Just a bunch of empty carbs.  I didn’t eat much there.  I don’t eat sugar or white flour, that includes white pasta, or processed food, and I won’t eat corn unless it is non-GMO.  I also noticed how many of the folks there were rather ‘portly”, and some down-right obese.  But that is what happens if you don’t eat right.

As usual, on Friday afternoon it was Preparation Day, getting ready for church the next day.  I had bought some Bok Choy and as I had a bunch of apples I found a recipe for ‘Bok Choy and Apples’.  I cooked the Boy Choy separately, and I am so glad that I did.  Bok Choy is very healthy, and as it is sold by the head, not by the pound, I bought the largest one.  Then I found out after I had cooked it, that the larger ones are more tough and fibrous.  There was no way I was going to take that chewy vegetable to the church potluck.  Anyway, I wanted all that healthiness for myself, so I ran the cooked Bok Choy through my Magic Bullet and made it into a creamy soup, enough for a few days.  It was delish!

As for the apples, onions and red bell peppers that I had cooked for the Boy Choy recipe,  I just added them to some chunks of chicken breast and added a chicken gravy.  So it became Chicken and Apples, and it was good.  I cooked it on the stove, and then took it to the church in a crockpot.  In another crockpot I had some Gnocchi, (Italian potato dumplings.)  There wasn’t much left over of either.

The Bible readings were Psa.100, and 95, Gen. 18:1-22:24, (about God’s promise to Abraham, and Sodom and Gomorrah), 2 Kings 4:1-37, Luke 24:31-53.  The Teaching was about Divine Favor and Grace.

There was lots of good food and nearly everyone has seconds when they are at our church potluck, it is always so good.  We have hardly any over-weight folks at our church, we can make up for our indulgence the rest of the week, and just over-eat on the Sabbath day.

Guide to Weight Loss. Portion Control. Thanksgiving Dinner. Avoid the Obesity Epidemic. Sand Creek Massacre. Coffee Rationed.

For "Foodie Friday":

Carbohydrate Density: A Better Guide to Weight Loss

"On its surface, the cause of the Western world's obesity epidemic seems simple: People are eating too many calories and getting too little calorie-burning exercise; the imbalance manifests as excess fat.

But this explanation is too simple. Even low-calorie diets and vigorous exercise fail to work in the long term for at least some people.

Here's why: Exercise, while vital to good health, is a poor exclusive means of weight control. Excess exercise tends to be counterbalanced by excess hunger, exemplified by the phrase "working up an appetite." A few people with extraordinary willpower can resist such hunger day after day, but for the vast majority, weight loss through exercise is a flawed option.

Meanwhile, simply cutting back on total calories is fraught with peril as well. An excellent study by Harvard University researchers confirms that the kinds of foods one eats -- rather than total calories per se -- is the most important indicator of whether a given eating pattern leads to weight gain or loss.

So what's the best way of eating to manage weight? Fortunately, some answers are emerging.

Increasingly, chronic, inappropriate inflammation is widely recognized as a driver of obesity. Inflammation in the body is a normal and healthy response to injury or attack by germs. We can see it, feel it and measure it on the surface as local heat, redness, swelling, and pain. This is the body's way of getting more nourishment and more immune activity into an area that needs to fend off infection or heal. But whole-body, elevated inflammation -- as evidenced by increased levels of certain protein markers in the blood -- has actually been shown to predict future weight gain in a study of non-diabetic healthy men. Inflammation, in short, helps make you fat.

Obesity, in turn, promotes chronically elevated inflammation. As this Harvard review article puts it, "A chronic, subacute state of inflammation often accompanies the accumulation of excess lipid in adipose tissue and liver (hepatic steatosis), evidenced by changes in both inflammatory cells and biochemical markers of inflammation."

In other words, obesity and inflammation feed each other in a destructive cycle. This may help explain why weight, once gained, can be so difficult to lose."  More at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andrew-weil-md/carbohydrates-weight-loss_b_1937312.html

"The obesity solution is straightforward. I'll discuss that, and list specific high- and low-density carbohydrate foods, in "Using the Carbohydrate Density Index." More at: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART03415/Using-The-Carbohydrate-Density-Index.html

______

Portion Control

"Focus on eating more slowly to give yourself time to tune in to your body’s hunger and satiety. It takes 20 minutes to half an hour for your brain to receive the message that your stomach is full, so take your time.

When you are no longer feeling hungry but still want to eat, think about why. Are you bored? Find something else to keep you busy. Are you upset? Call a friend and vent. Are you stressed or anxious? Turn on some music or go for a brisk walk to relax and de-stress. Don’t try to fix your problems with food.

Keep your portions down by following these basic tips:

  • image Use a smaller plate. As simple as this sounds, it works. Studies have shown that people eat more when there’s more on their plate, regardless of how hungry they feel. So put less on your plate but trick your eyes into thinking you’re eating more by using a smaller plate. One cup of food on a small plate looks like more than the same cup of food on a large plate.
  • Never eat directly from a container, bag, or box. It’s so hard to keep track of how much you're eating when you’re just reaching in and stuffing food in your mouth. Before you know it, the bag is gone. Instead, serve yourself one portion on a plate or in a bowl, put away the rest, and only then sit down to eat.
  • Measure, measure, measure! Keep that measuring cup or spoon handy, and measure out your cereal into a bowl, your rice onto your plate, your tuna salad, your potato chips, your strawberries — everything."

The Obesity Epidemic: Fight Back Today with God's Help!

Bathroom scalles

"Obesity.  Every time I see this in the news, I think "What an ugly word!"  For anyone who is overweight or has reached the state of obesity, that state is nothing but uncomfortable. Nobody likes it. The condition often carries a social stigma.

Why am I interested in this and writing about it? I have personally experienced the challenge of gaining weight and then struggling to lose it for much of my life. With God's help, I have dropped 50 pounds sensibly—but this time I have maintained this loss for the better part of a year. For me, it's presently a great feeling of relief and freedom!

But I know firsthand what it feels like when you're trying to lose weight and it's not working. It hurts. It's an emotional burden. It's discouraging. What can I say to readers who know someone who is overweight or are themselves facing this major challenge?

Consider this: to achieve healthy weight loss and sustain it, it's going to take a commitment. And to be truly successful, it's going to take direct help from God Himself. I know that for a fact. I've experienced it. There is hope!

If someone tells you "Just use more will power to lose weight," they don't understand the true nature of the condition."  More at: http://www.ucg.org/blog/obesity-epidemic-fight-back-today-gods-help/

How to Avoid the Obesity Epidemic

"An increasing number of Americans are becoming overweight, which can lead to many serious health problems, even premature death. Here's how to escape the epidemic.

As we continue to modernize our lifestyles — riding instead of walking, working in a cubicle instead of in a field, playing iPods instead of sports — more people are becoming overweight and, worse, obese. In fact, there are so many overweight and obese people that some public health officials now call it an epidemic, particularly because of the many resulting health problems.

Obesity: A Worldwide Problem

Around the world, more than one billion adults are overweight and about 300 million of them are obese. In the United States, 66 percent of all adults are overweight and, of those, 32 percent are obese.

Obesity levels in Japan and some African nations are below 5 percent, but they’re rising. Obesity rates in China overall are not high, but in some of that country’s larger cities, rates are up 20 percent.

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions, too. The number of overweight children in the United States has doubled since 1980, and for teens, it's tripled. And the problem with children is now a global issue as well.

Obesity: Why It’s Happening

Although your genes play a role in your body weight, there are other factors involved. In many places around the world, particularly the United States, we have plenty of nutrient-rich food to eat and easy access to fattening fast foods and sweets. Also, because of our modern lifestyles, we are not as active as we once were. The end result: We're eating more calories than we can burn.

Obesity: How It Differs From Being Overweight

Obesity and overweight are terms used to describe a level of excess weight that's considered unhealthy for your body size. One way to determine if you are overweight or obese is to figure out your body mass index (BMI), a calculation you make by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters (kg/m2). Don’t worry — you don't have to do the math; you can find BMI calculators online."  More at: http://www.everydayhealth.com/healthy-living/obesity-prevention.aspx

On This Day:

Colorado militia massacre Cheyenne at Sand Creek, Nov 29, 1864:

"Colonel John Chivington and his Colorado volunteers massacre a peaceful village of Cheyenne camped near Sand Creek in Colorado Territory, setting off a long series of bloody retaliatory attacks by Indians.

Chivington, a former Methodist preacher with ambitions to become a territorial delegate to Congress, saw in the Indian wars an opportunity to gain the esteem he would need to win a government office. Disappointed that the spring of 1864 failed to produce any major battles, Chivington apparently determined to burn villages and kill Cheyenne whenever and wherever he could, making little distinction between peaceful or aggressive bands. Angered by frequent Indian attacks on settlers and the theft of their horses and cattle, many Colorado settlers supported Chivington's methods, and a number of men volunteered to join his forces on hundred-day enlistments, forming the 3rd Colorado Volunteers.

Fearing that U.S. troops might mistakenly identify his band of peaceful Cheyenne as having participated in the attacks on settlers, Chief Black Kettle traveled to Denver under escort of U.S. Army Major Edward Wynkoop to affirm his non-hostile intentions. Chivington and the territorial governor of Colorado clearly did not want peace, yet they could not openly reject the overtures of Black Kettle.

Believing that he had a promise of safety if he brought his people into Fort Lyon, Black Kettle lead the band of Cheyenne to a spot designated by Major Wynkoop near the fort along a small stream known as Sand Creek. The tribe flew an American flag and a white flag at the camp to indicate their alliance with the U.S. and alert all to their generally peaceful intentions.

Determined to have his glorious battle, Chivington refused to recognize that Black Kettle's settlement was peaceful. At daybreak, Chivington and his 700 volunteers, many of them drunk, attacked the sleeping village at Sand Creek. Most of the Cheyenne men were away hunting, so the women, children, and elders were largely defenseless. In the frenzied slaughter that followed, Chivington and his men killed more than 100 women and children and 28 men. Black Kettle escaped the attack. The soldiers scalped and mutilated the corpses, hacking off body parts that included male and female genitals, and then returned to Denver where they displayed the scalps to approving crowds during intermission at a downtown theatre.

Because of Chivington's depraved slaughter, the central plains exploded with retaliatory attacks from Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho Indians. Fortunately, not everyone applauded Chivington's behavior--many Americans, particularly in the east, strongly condemned Chivington's attack and the barbaric mutilations. Subsequent congressional and military investigations denounced Chivington, but claimed they could not punish him because he had resigned from the army and was no longer under military jurisdiction. Nonetheless, Chivington spent the rest of his life trying to escape the stigma of his deplorable behavior at Sand Creek."

Coffee rationing begins, Nov 29, 1942:

"On this day in 1942, coffee joins the list of items rationed in the United States. Despite record coffee production in Latin American countries, the growing demand for the bean from both military and civilian sources, and the demands placed on shipping, which was needed for other purposes, required the limiting of its availability.

Scarcity or shortages were rarely the reason for rationing during the war. Rationing was generally employed for two reasons: (1) to guarantee a fair distribution of resources and foodstuffs to all citizens; and (2) to give priority to military use for certain raw materials, given the present emergency.

At first, limiting the use of certain products was voluntary. For example, President Roosevelt launched "scrap drives" to scare up throwaway rubber-old garden hoses, tires, bathing caps, etc.--in light of the Japanese capture of the Dutch East Indies, a source of rubber for the United States. Collections were then redeemed at gas stations for a penny a pound. Patriotism and the desire to aid the war effort were enough in the early days of the war.

But as U.S. shipping, including oil tankers, became increasingly vulnerable to German U-boat attacks, gas became the first resource to be rationed. Starting in May 1942, in 17 eastern states, car owners were restricted to three gallons of gas a week. By the end of the year, gas rationing extended to the rest of the country, requiring drivers to paste ration stamps onto the windshields of their cars. Butter was another item rationed, as supplies were reserved for military breakfasts.

Along with coffee, the sugar and milk that went with it were also limited. All together, about one-third of all food commonly consumed by civilians was rationed at one time or another during the war. The black market, an underground source of rationed goods at prices higher than the ceilings set by the Office of Price Administration, was a supply source for those Americans with the disposable incomes needed to pay the inflated prices.

Some items came off the rationing list early; coffee was released as early as July 1943, but sugar was rationed until June 1947."

Yesterday:

Claudia, Jay, their neighbor, and I, were supposed to go to Claudia's daughter's house for Thanksgiving, but so many people were sick with some kind of crud that it was cancelled.  Claudia was feeling so bad that she could hardly crawl out of bed.  She said that Jay stayed in bed all day, too.

That gave me time to catch up on some blogs, and laundry.  There, in the dryer, was a forgotten previously dried load of clothes, and it had several tank tops in it, whereas now, I am washing t-shirts, turtlenecks, and sweaters!  It didn't take long for the weather to change.

DSCF0018 Shay and Ray invited me to have Thanksgiving dinner with them.  Her sister, their son, and his friend were there, too.  A good time, and food, was had by all.  I brought a little bit of turkey home for Misty, as I usually let her have a little bit of whatever I eat.

Even though it was cold, the sun was bright.  When it was setting, I was glad we had put that mini-blind on the screen porch to cut out the glare.

It's 29° right now, but expected to be sunny, and go to 61° today.
