Drapes Done! Cactus. Betcha Didn't Know This.

It is still hot, it was overcast all day with ominous black clouds and thunder all around us, but no rain.

Yesterday, Ray didn't know if he could work today, so I told him to have a day off. I wanted to get the drapes sewn, and I only have time in the mornings. I even got up later than usual. My sinuses had woken me up a couple of times in the night, so I was lazy and languished in bed until 7.00 AM. It felt very strange not to be on a schedule this morning.

It still took me until after lunchtime to get the sewing done. After eating a blue cheese and tomato omelette, I went to the grocery store in town. I called Jay while I was there, as I had read that his tortoise should like cactus, the ones that you can buy in the produce dept. I wanted to make sure he still had the tortoise before I bought any. Jay had made him a big wooden pen in a shady spot next to his house, but I wondered if the tortoise had dig out of there.
I didn't know until I called, that while I was at the store Claudia had invited me to dinner, and left messages on my machine. So I went straight down there when I got back from town, and we had baby back ribs, butter beans, and sauteed yellow, red, and green peppers with diced potatoes. Jay was drunk and boisterous, so Claudia had to send him home next door, but he kept on popping back over to interrupt our conversation. Claudia and I went over to Jay's house and watched the tortoise eat some of the cactus, so it liked it.

Bet You Didn't Know This...
Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notched edges, while pennies and nickels do not? The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren't notched because the metals they contain were not valuable enough to shave.

Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right ... while women's clothes have buttons on the left? When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

A quiet leisurely day.
