Are New Year Celebrations Pagan in Origin?

Are New Year Celebrations Pagan in Origin?

“Simply put, the answer is yes—New Year celebrations did originate in paganism.

Much of the symbolism associated with New Year’s celebrations today has very definite pagan origins.

In the earliest days of the Church (the first and second centuries after Christ) there were no such celebrations as Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The New Catholic Encyclopedia states: “According to the hypothesis . . . accepted by most scholars today, the birth of Christ was assigned the date of the winter solstice (December 25 in the Julian [Roman] Calendar, January 6 in the Egyptian), because on this day, as the sun began to return to northern skies, the pagan devotees of Mithra celebrated dies natalis Solis Invicti (birthday of the invincible sun)” (1967, Vol. 3, p. 656).

Those customs carried over in the observance of Christmas (with its many traditions and practices steeped in paganism), and the “birth” of the “new year” of the sun. This is why the Roman calendar in use today designates Jan. 1 as the beginning of the new year as opposed to God’s designation of the spring month of Abib or Nisan on the Hebrew calendar as the beginning of the year (Exodus 12:1-2).

Much of the symbolism associated with New Year’s celebrations today has very definite pagan origins. Kissing at the moment of transition to the next year is rooted in pagan sexual practice and superstition. And evergreen wreaths associated with Christmas were originally part of the pagan Calend celebration of Jan. 1.

Because we live in this secular society and most of the world operates according to the commonly used Roman calendar, it’s common to think of a new calendar year as beginning Jan. 1. Yet involvement in the celebration of that is not appropriate.

That said, one should be careful not to become too judgmental if, for example, someone is viewing a football game or parade at that time of year—as opposed to actually celebrating a New Year festival.

If you’d like to learn more, many resources are available that show the pagan origins of New Year’s Day celebrations. You can find related material in reference encyclopedias and online research resources as well.”  From:  https://www.ucg.org/learn/bible-questions-and-answers/are-new-year-celebrations-pagan-origin

10 Bad Ideas in the Bible. Number 666. Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. Update.

For "Scripture Sunday":

10 Bad Ideas Found in the Bible

"Do you really have to live by what God says in the Bible? Many people seem to get on quite well by doing whatever they want. Isn’t God all-merciful so that everything will be just fine? Think again.

Many websites feature top ten lists which can be fun and sometimes informative. Although the following may not be the top ten ranking things, it isn’t hard to say that these must be among the worst ideas—bringing the worst consequences—in all of God’s Word. Read the Bible and you can quickly find many examples of what happens when people acted on a bad idea—defying God’s instructions and suffering the consequences.

1. Choosing to live in Sodom

That’s what Abraham’s nephew Lot did. When their two families had just too much livestock for them to live together, Abraham gave Lot the choice of settling wherever he wanted. Lot saw that the area around Sodom had a good climate and good grazing land, so he moved his family there. Bad Idea!

The people there were so sinful and immoral that God determined to destroy the entire city (along with its neighbor, Gomorrah).  Lot lost just about everything he owned as he fled just ahead of a storm of fire and brimstone. To make things worse, when Lot’s wife looked longingly back on Sodom, God turned her into a pillar of salt—as a warning to all who love this present evil world more than the way of righteousness! (Read: Genesis 13: 7-11 and chapter 19.)

2. Taking credit for building a great empire

We learn this from the Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar. Even though God had the prophet Daniel warn him that he needed to keep his ego in check, he one day looked at the grandeur of the city and congratulated himself on building it all by his own mighty power. Bad Idea!

Immediately he suffered the promised punishment of losing his ability to reason, and losing his job as king. He became like a wild animal for seven years, long enough to realize that he needed to give God the credit for whatever things he accomplished. (Read: Daniel 4.)

3. Insulting the King of God’s choice

A man named Nabal did this when King David sent soldiers to ask for a contribution of supplies for his men who protected Nabal’s flocks and herdsmen for months.  Instead of rewarding the men, Nabal called them liars and called David a runaway slave. Bad Idea!

Even though Nabal’s wife convinced David not to act on his own anger at the insult, Nabal soon had a heart attack and ten days later God ended his life. Paying David’s men for their work would have been a lot wiser. (Read: I Samuel 25.)

4. Lying to God’s Ministers to Make Yourself Look Good

A married couple named Ananias and Sapphira sold some property and claimed to donate the entire proceeds to God’s fledgling church. However, they secretly kept back part of the money—hoping to get all the credit but keep much of the money. Bad Idea!

As soon as they were exposed in their deceit and conspiracy, both husband and wife, in turn, dropped dead on the spot. They could have kept as much of the money as they pleased, but they wanted everyone to think they were super generous. (Read: Acts 5.)

5. Attempting a coup to takeover leadership of God’s nation

While ancient Israel wandered in the wilderness, Korah, Dathan, and Abiram claimed that Moses was no one special and wasn’t doing his job well. They campaigned that they should take charge themselves. Bad Idea!

After warning everyone else to clear the area, God caused the earth open up and literally swallowed the rebels in a moment. From then on everyone else paid closer attention to the man that God had chosen to lead Israel. (Read: Numbers 16.)

6. Interfering with God’s ministers preaching the true gospel

A sorcerer named Elymas learned that the hard way when the apostle Paul came to his town in Asia-Minor. Elymas tried to persuade people to believe a false religion. Bad Idea!

When Paul finally had enough of his interference, he declared that Elymas was going to be blind for awhile to learn a lesson. As soon as the words were said, things went dark for Elymas and he had to find a guide. Paul was able to go about his work without interference after that. (Read: Acts:13:6-11 .)

7. Chasing God’s people with a hostile army

Pharaoh, the leader of ancient Egypt tried this when he had second thoughts about setting the Israelites free to leave the country under Moses’ leadership. As if holding Israel in slavery for generations wasn’t bad enough, when they were leaving for the Promised Land, Pharaoh determined to drag them back. Bad Idea!

The pursuit led directly into the Red Sea which God had parted to give the Israelites a way out.  Pharaoh’s army did not make it across. Just when the Egyptians reached the midst of the sea, God stopped holding back the water. Not one solider escaped that watery grave. (Read: Exodus 14.)

8. Letting people call you a god.

King Herod of Palestine gave a speech to the people of Tyre and Sidon, and to flatter him, they began chanting that he was a god and not a man. However he did not bother to set the record straight. Bad idea!

God wasn’t pleased that Herod deified himself! He caused the king to suffer a gruesome death in which his flesh was eaten by worms. At that point everyone there realized who truly was God and who was not. (Read: Acts:12:20-23 .)

9. Selling out your brother

The forefathers of Israel did that when they jealously and literally sold out their brother Joseph. He was already the favorite of their father, Jacob, and then he had dreams that he would rule over all his brothers. When they’d had enough of that, they sold Joseph as a slave to some passing traders headed for Egypt . Bad Idea!

God inspired Joseph to interpret dreams for Pharaoh which led to the young Israelite becoming the prime minister of Egypt. Years later, the same brothers who sold Joseph as a slave ended up begging him to sell them food during a terrible famine—and to spare their lives. That’s something to remember before picking on a younger brother or sister! (Read: Genesis 37 to 43.)

10. Deciding for yourself what is good and what is evil

Adam and Eve, the first human beings on earth, had a nice life in the Garden of Eden, until they decided to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. They believed the serpent, who told them they wouldn’t die, and that instead they would be able to take God’s place in determining what was good and what wasn’t. Bad Idea!

God sent them out to do hard labor for a living. Worse yet, they and their descendents were left cut off from the understanding of the right way to live, which only God can teach. People have been suffering because of that bad decision ever since! (Read:Genesis:2:15-17
and chapter 3.)

The take-away…

Admittedly, these are examples of some of the most unusual consequences for bad decisions ever. They are noteworthy because they were unique. Most of us won’t be swallowed by a sinkhole in the earth or drop dead on the spot when we do something wrong. However, just because punishment does not happen immediately, doesn’t mean that it will not come.

The Apostle Paul said it very well, “God is not mocked; whatever a man sows, that he shall reap” (Galatians:6:7), and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans:6:23). The first is an agricultural analogy that means sooner or later, you will get what you’ve got coming. That is, you will unless you sincerely ask God to forgive you and to help you change your attitude and behavior.

The great truth of Christianity is often summarized in saying that “Jesus died for our sins”—that He suffered so that we don’t have to. That doesn’t mean that we can do whatever we please with no consequences. Consider the fate of the folks described above. That doesn’t have to be us. God is merciful, but next time you have a bad idea, think again!" From: http://www.ucg.org/youth/10-bad-ideas-found-bible/

The Number 666

An Amazing Fact: "For many people just saying the number “666” conjures up ominous images of secret occult ceremonies and the evil powers mentioned in Bible prophecy. Others have refused phone numbers, license plates, and credit cards containing the numbers 666 because of their fearful superstitions. There is even a very long word describing this phobia. It’s known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.

Highway 666 running from Gallup, New Mexico to Monticello, Utah was nicknamed the “Devil’s Highway” because of the Scripture that identifies that number with the beast of Revelation. This satanic connotation, combined with an unusually high fatality rate, convinced some people the highway was cursed. The problem was compounded because Satanists were chronically stealing the highway signs as souvenirs. So in 2003 the U.S. Highway Department decided to rename Highway 666 as U.S. Route 491.

We don’t have to be afraid of the number 666. It is the natural number sequentially following 665 and preceding 667. Nevertheless, mathematically 666 is a very unique number. It is an abundant number. It is the sum of the first 36 natural numbers (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 up to 36 = 666). Yes, that means if you add up all 36 numbers on a roulette wheel the resulting total is “666”. While going to the casino will cost you dearly, you will not automatically receive the mark of the beast. The number 666 is also a triangular number since 36 is both square and triangular, 12 + 12 + 12 = 36. And of course 222 times three is 666.

The number 666 is also the sum of the squares of the first seven prime numbers (i.e. 22 + 32 + 52 + 72 + 112 + 132 + 172 = 666). If you add up the first six Roman numerals, IVXLCD, the total is, you guessed it, 666. Even organic molecules are based on carbon-12, with 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the nucleus, surrounded by 6 electrons.
With all this in mind it makes one wonder why the book of Revelation says, “Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666” (Revelation 13:18). It obviously helps us to identify a power that is against God.
KEY BIBLE TEXTS
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. - Revelation 13:1

Update:

The few mornings that Ray worked, we got a few things done, but Jay has been sick and hurt his leg, so we haven't seen much of him.

We have been working on the house, changing out the old calcium-stained faucets for upgraded better quality white ones, and things like that.

A lot of my time was spent listing all kinds of things for sale on eBay, Craigslist, and our local www.bookoo.com, but I think it will take an estate sale to get most of this stuff sold so that I can sell this house.

Jay said that he really needed to go to church, so he and I went to church on the Sabbath, Saturday the 7th. day of the week, to our usual little church on FM 1097.

The Bible readings were Deut.1-3:22, and Isaiah 1:1-27.  The message was about "Is God Interested in You" and the pastor quoted lots of scriptures that show how God is interested in our well-being and is happy to hear from us and talk to him in prayer.

The potluck was great as usual, and we all enjoyed the fellowship in the dining hall.  I had taken an air conditioner over there for the dining hall the week before, but it was too large for the window. During the week I hadn't had any help to get it out of my van, which was a good thing as one of the congregation wanted to buy it from me.  That made my day!

Where Is God When Disaster Strikes?

by Mike Bennett - October 30, 2012

Hurricanes bring disaster to millions of people. Where is God when disaster strikes?

“Hurricanes bring disaster to millions of people. Where is God when disaster strikes? Hurricane Sandy has brought major disaster to perhaps 50 million people. A school bus crash killed two innocent children in Kentucky. When disasters strike, where is God?

As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Sandy had killed more than 80 people in the Caribbean and the eastern United States and Canada. Millions were without power. New York City’s subways and tunnels were flooded, and the BBC reported that “the New York Stock Exchange will stay shut on Tuesday—the first time it has closed for two consecutive days owing to weather since 1888.”

Though she lost her hurricane status overnight, Sandy is still being called a superstorm and is projected to continue wreaking disaster on into Canada. U.S President Barack Obama has declared Sandy’s devastation a “major disaster.”

There are no minor disasters

As Sandy slammed into New York, New Jersey and surrounding areas Monday night, another disaster was occurring in rural Carroll County, Kentucky. My daughter, a teacher there, called to ask for our prayers about a school bus accident that occurred about 4:30 p.m. Details were sketchy, but the photos of the bus on the Internet were frightening.

This morning the Louisville, Kentucky, TV station WAVE reported on its website:

“Two children were pronounced dead at the scene, three were transported to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville where they are expecting a fourth.  One child was transported to UK Medical Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky; an additional three children were released to their parents after the crash. …    Kosair released they are treating children for broken bones and head injuries. No additional information on injuries had been released at this time.  The bus was on the way to drop children off after their head start program. The bus was equipped with seatbelts, and police said it appears all the children were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.”

This devastating accident is sure to have a profound effect on the entire community. The extent of the disaster is not as large as the one caused by Hurricane Sandy, but the impact is no less major.

Where was God?

When disasters strike, a natural reaction for religious people is to pray. But it is also natural to wonder, why did God allow this tragedy? A good and loving and powerful God could have prevented the deaths caused by Hurricane Sandy and by the school bus crash, couldn’t He? So where was He? Why didn’t He intervene?

This is a question of the ages. Those who have asked it include not just the godless and irreligious. Some of the great people of faith have also cried out for an answer, and God has allowed those questions—and their answers—to be recorded in His book, the Holy Bible.

Questions and answers

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning?” (Psalm 22:1).

Though King David had these thoughts and recorded these words, they were also prophetic. They were words that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, cried out during His crucifixion (Matthew 27:46).

Why did God not intervene even for His own Son? The answer involves sin, free choice and the decision of humanity as a whole to reject God. In order to accomplish His great eternal plan, God was willing both to allow humanity to make its own choices and to provide the ultimate sacrifice to repair the results of those sinful choices.

Why has God taken a hands-off approach?

You could say God’s plan for humanity is a high-stakes venture. God wants nothing less than for each of us to become His very children, to have His love and His character. He wants us to freely choose to live His beautiful and beneficial way.

But this requires that we have free choice. If He forced us to live His way, we would be robots and would not develop righteous character. His character can only develop when we have a real choice.

Sadly, with free choice has come a world overflowing with bad choices. It started with our first parents, who rejected God’s revelation of right and wrong and chose to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They chose for themselves and their children to try to decide on their own what is right and wrong.

And those wrong choices have piled up, producing the world of pain and suffering we see today.

But God has, at incredible cost, provided a way out. Jesus Christ came the first time to pay the penalty of our sins—if we will chose to repent and live His way. And Christ promised to come a second time to rescue humanity!

So, where is God?

This human experiment of self-destructive choices is nearing an end. God has promised that He will not let humanity annihilate itself, as we seem to be on the brink of doing (Matthew 24:21-22).

So, where is God now?

  • God is always ready to comfort—He is the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3).
  • God is eager to take our burdens and give us rest (Matthew 11:28).
  • God is ready to forgive us and give us His Holy Spirit and help (Acts 2:38).
  • God is ready and waiting to send Jesus Christ back soon to set up the wonderful, peaceful Kingdom of God.
Where are we?

God tells us where He is. He is near and ready to help. He also wants to know where we are.

Please go to Him in prayer and ask for His comfort and blessing for those facing disaster in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and those grieving in Carroll County, Kentucky, and elsewhere. Sigh and cry for the abominations brought by wrong choices in this world, and pray fervently for Jesus Christ’s return to bring a new world of peace. Seek God with all your heart and you will find Him and the answers He provides (Matthew 7:7-8).

On This Day:

Entrance to King Tut's tomb discovered, Nov 4, 1922:

“British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a step leading to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

When Carter first arrived in Egypt in 1891, most of the ancient Egyptian tombs had been discovered, though the little-known King Tutankhamen, who had died when he was 18, was still unaccounted for. After World War I, Carter began an intensive search for "King Tut's Tomb," finally finding steps to the burial room hidden in the debris near the entrance of the nearby tomb of King Ramses VI in the Valley of the Kings. On November 26, 1922, Carter and fellow archaeologist Lord Carnarvon entered the interior chambers of the tomb, finding them miraculously intact.

Thus began a monumental excavation process in which Carter carefully explored the four-room tomb over several years, uncovering an incredible collection of several thousand objects. The most splendid architectural find was a stone sarcophagus containing three coffins nested within each other. Inside the final coffin, which was made out of solid gold, was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years. Most of these treasures are now housed in the Cairo Museum.”

Heavy rain leads to flooding in New England, Nov 4, 1927:

“On this day in 1927, 10 days of extremely heavy rain in New England lead to flooding; the floods went on to kill 200 people and cause millions of dollars in damages. Vermont’s Green Mountain region was particularly hard hit by the storm.

Weeks earlier, a tropical storm had hit the Caribbean. As this storm moved north, it collided with a cold front from Canada. It then stalled over the Hudson River Valley of New York, bringing overwhelming rain to northern New York, Vermont and western Massachusetts.

The Winooski River in Vermont was most affected by the rain—major flooding occurred all along the river’s path. Thousands of people had to flee their homes as the waters rose. Many small towns were uninhabitable for weeks after the flooding began. In total, it was estimated that $28 million in damages were incurred.

The New England flood of 1927 was not the first major flood in the country that year. From April to August, the Mississippi River experienced some of its worst floods in recorded history.”

Yesterday:

After Wendy and I had our long Saturday phone call, I slowly fed the animals and dressed, it wasn’t a day for rushing around.

Jay was working at a neighbor’s house, so he wasn’t going to church again.  I arrived at the Willis church early enough for Bible Study at 12.30 PM.  It was more about The Gifts of The Spirit, 1 Cor 13: 8-10, 12, and the key text was Eph 4:11-13.

After the sermon we all went into the large dining room and kitchen.  The beautifully equipped kitchen is divided from the dining area by a big serving bar, where everything is served buffet style. I have made it my job to put out the plates, plastic-ware, napkins and serving utensils.  There are so many dishes brought for the potlucks, that by the time I am done with that, it is time for the prayer and eating the good grub.

But we had a glitch, the power went out.  It had started to rain heavily, and it was very overcast.  The hot dishes are put in the four big ovens to get up to the required safe temperature ahead of time, but the ovens are digitally controlled.  Fortunately, the two big cooktops are gas.   There was no panic, no complaints, everyone just pitched in, and those with phones with flashlights hung them over the cooktops.   Big candles were put on the serving bar, and we managed just fine.

On the way home I stopped at the mail box, and my camera card reader thingy had arrived. Here are some of the pictures:

Buffalo Going Home. Game Full of Lead. Giorgio Armani. Fur or Faux. Puppies and Kittens Bait. Shaking Mammals. Pet Superstitions. First Parachutist. Hero Olive.

For “Mammal Monday”:

Restoring Buffalo to their Home on the Range

“Yesterday, I drove a thousand miles across the Great Plains and saw not a single buffalo. I did see domestic cows and sheep, coal-fired power plants and wind farms, miles of power lines and fences. I saw immense open prairie; grass-covered, wind-scoured, treeless hills tumbling out to the horizon. But in a land where 30 million American bison once roamed in herds that would rival the wildebeest of the African Serengeti, we now have to go out of our way to find one.

Lone Yellowstone Bison

If you want to know where all the bison went, ask Jason Baldes.   Jason is an expert on the history of the bison, and as a Shoshone tribal member, he understands this history in a way most of us can’t.

Jason explains that the plants, animals and humans of the American prairie have been evolving together for millennia. Bison were an integral part of the prairie ecosystem: their hooves broke up the soil so seeds could germinate and their wallows – the depressions left when they rolled in the dirt – gathered rain which fed medicinal plants.

The lives of Native Americans were also inextricably tied to the bison. They followed the herds across the plains, relying on the great creatures for food, shelter and tools. They worshipped bison, performing religious ceremonies to promote its abundance and express gratitude for its ultimate sacrifice to them in the hunt.

Yellowstone Bison Herd

The U.S. Army recognized this reliance in the late 19th century, when the westward movement of miners and homesteaders led to clashes with the resident Sioux, Cheyenne, Shoshone, and Arapaho. To defeat the tribes and clear the way for “Manifest Destiny,” the U.S. Army used the following tactic: eliminate the tribes’ main food source.

A herd of wild bison approach the author’s car in Yellowstone National Park (Photo by Sarah Pizzo)

A few hundred bison survived the slaughter. Some took shelter in what later became Yellowstone National Park, where they thrive today as the last source of free-roaming, genetically pure bison (i.e. not interbred with domestic cattle).”   More at: http://blog.nwf.org/2012/10/restoring-buffalo-to-their-home-on-the-range/

Pet expert Marc Marrone dispels some myths about black cats, dogs, birds and rabbits.

-----------

From me:  Black cats are considered lucky in Europe.

Superstition, prejudice, bringer of good or bad luck

“The folklore surrounding black cats varies from culture to culture. In Great Britain, and in Ireland, black cats are a symbol of good luck. The Scottish believe that a strange black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. In Celtic mythology, a fairy known as the Cat Sìth takes the form of a black cat. Black cats are also considered good luck in Japan, and Australia.  Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors.”    From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_cat

Many places in the Bible it tells us not to be superstitious:

“A Christian is called away from superstition, error, bondage, deception, guilt, depravity, ignorance and a destructive life, from being a captive of Satan.”

On This Day:

The first parachutist, Oct 22, 1797:

“The first parachute jump of note is made by André-Jacques Garnerin from a hydrogen balloon 3,200 feet above Paris.

Leonardo da Vinci conceived the idea of the parachute in his writings, and the Frenchman Louis-Sebastien Lenormand fashioned a kind of parachute out of two umbrellas and jumped from a tree in 1783, but André-Jacques Garnerin was the first to design and test parachutes capable of slowing a man's fall from a high altitude.

Garnerin first conceived of the possibility of using air resistance to slow an individual's fall from a high altitude while a prisoner during the French Revolution. Although he never employed a parachute to escape from the high ramparts of the Hungarian prison where he spent three years, Garnerin never lost interest in the concept of the parachute. In 1797, he completed his first parachute, a canopy 23 feet in diameter and attached to a basket with suspension lines.

On October 22, 1797, Garnerin attached the parachute to a hydrogen balloon and ascended to an altitude of 3,200 feet. He then clambered into the basket and severed the parachute from the balloon. As he failed to include an air vent at the top of the prototype, Garnerin oscillated wildly in his descent, but he landed shaken but unhurt half a mile from the balloon's takeoff site. In 1799, Garnerin's wife, Jeanne-Genevieve, became the first female parachutist. In 1802, Garnerin made a spectacular jump from 8,000 feet during an exhibition in England. He died in a balloon accident in 1823 while preparing to test a new parachute.”

173rd Airborne trooper saves comrades, Oct 22, 1965:

“In action this day near Phu Cuong, about 35 miles northwest of Saigon, PFC Milton Lee Olive III of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, throws himself on an enemy grenade and saves four soldiers, including his platoon leader, 1st Lt. James Sanford.

The action came during a patrol that made contact with Communist forces on the southern fringes of the infamous "Iron Triangle," a traditional Communist stronghold. Private Olive's body absorbed the full, deadly blast of the grenade and he died saving his comrades. Lieutenant Sanford later said of Olive's act that "It was the most incredible display of selfless bravery I ever witnessed." Olive, a native of Chicago, was only 18 years old when he died; he received the Medal of Honor posthumously six months later. The city of Chicago honored its fallen hero by naming a junior college, a lakefront park, and a portion of the McCormick Place convention center after him.”

Postcard from 1912 for “St. Patrick’s Day”

"March 17th is often observed as St. Patrick’s Day.  Some see it as a Catholic holiday, while others mainly an Irish holiday.  There are many items in news today announcing upcoming parties and parades for it.

Aside from its non-biblical origins, what else is wrong with it?   Apparently it is a day that driving becomes more dangerous:

Friends don’t let friends drive drunk this Saint Patrick’s Day:

Like most holidays, Saint Patrick’s Day has become a popular time for people to celebrate with family and friends. However, due to the large numbers of drunk drivers, the day has also become a very dangerous one.

On Saint Patrick’s Day 2009, 37% of the drivers and motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or higher, according to statistics obtained from the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Additional NHTSA statistics also disclosed that in 2009 there were 103 crash fatalities on Saint Patrick’s Day. Of that number, 47 people were killed in crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcyclist with a BAC of .08% or higher."   More at: http://www.cogwriter.com/news/doctrine/st-patricks-day-a-more-dangerous-time-to-drive/

Do You Feel Lucky Today?

Good luck, bad luck, no luck and even luck that can follow you - is this really what controls your future?

Do You Feel Lucky Today?

"Across the globe the seemingly harmless Irish tradition of having to wear green on March 17 so the luck of the Irish will be with you has saturated our society. What's all the fuss over a man called St. Patrick that has resulted in widespread partying and celebration?

Even more widespread is the concept of luck, a seemingly supernatural force that swings the odds of circumstances in people's favor or against them. Is this acceptable from a biblical perspective? Should we be wishing others "Good luck"?  As St. Patrick's Day comes around, it's a good time to take a hard look at luck.

Irish tradition

Throughout the past 1, 500 or so years, traditions have grown, folklore has spread, and "luck" has sprouted in our everyday language. The leprechaun and icons like the color green, the shamrock and the pot o' gold have all come to be associated with the celebration of St. Patrick's Day.

Legend states that St. Patrick used the shamrock or three-leaved clover to explain the Trinity. Its three leaves supposedly represented the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Eventually, the custom was adopted of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. (The Trinity doctrine, however, is unbiblical—for more information, request our free booklet Is God a Trinity?)

A shamrock is different from a four-leaf clover. According to Celtic tradition, when a four-leaf clover is found, it is said to represent God's grace, with the four leaves standing for faith, hope, love and luck.  Ironically, the real Patrick would probably have frowned on the traditions associated with his feast day—as well as the holiday itself.

What's with luck?

Of course, the concept of luck or fortune is not exclusive to Irish tradition. We find it throughout human history and throughout the world today.  We now hear phrases like "good luck with the job interview," or "good luck on that test." While many deem this merely an expression of hoping for the best outcome, not really believing in luck, others take the concept of luck more seriously.   Some things associated with luck seem harmless, like wishing on a star, shooting stars, wishing wells, lucky trinkets or fairies. But there are underlying issues here that need to be raised.

Over the years luck has become like a god in society. Luck seems to decide things like your fate, car accidents, test scores, the job hunt, pay raises or even the answer you'll be given about that date you want to go on this Saturday night. People believe luck controls things and that it provides different opportunities for different people. Decisions are even based on it. Consider that many skyscrapers have no 13th floor—as 13 is considered unlucky.

No luck with the Bible

Looking to the Bible, we find that it gives no credibility to luck. In the first of the Ten Commandments, God states, "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus:20:3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.). The intent of His command here is that nothing is to take a higher priority in our lives than Him! This first command warns us to not accept a religion or philosophy that teaches that our life and well-being originate or depend on anything other than the one true God.

As He often does, God colorfully portrays the utter foolishness of making gods of wood and stone, but the biblical nations of ancient Israel and Judah manufactured as many fake deities as the number of cities in the land of Judah (Jeremiah:2:27-28[27]Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.[28]But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.). "See if they can save you in the time of your trouble!" God taunted them and modern mankind (compare verse 28). Today our peoples still trust in worthless and inanimate things to save us—such as weapons, money and even actual idols by seeing power in crosses, religious statues and good luck charms.

God even laments over His people rejecting Him "and offering food and wine to the gods you call ‘Good Luck' and ‘Fate'" (Isaiah:65:11But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number., Contemporary English Version). Any credit to luck is really a form of idolatry.

No luck at all

Maybe you've heard people say, "I know luck doesn't exist, but good luck anyway!" Perhaps they're conceding that there may be luck after all—or maybe they just don't know how else to wish someone well. They could simply say, "Do well" or "All the best." Or they could look to God, saying, "God be with you" or "God bless you" (yet only if He is truly sought).

After all, true power is with God, not with luck. As the Bible tells us: "Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things … by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power; not one is missing … The Creator of the ends of the earth neither faints nor is weary" (Isaiah:40:26-28[26]Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.[27]Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?[28]Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.).

Using luck in our vocabulary and lives may seem harmless. But God is jealous for His people. He truly loves you and desires the best for your future. It does not please Him when we turn to fables and smooth phrases that announce our dependence on anything but Him. Everything we are and have ultimately comes from God. The only reliable assurance that our future is secure lies in our relationship with our Creator, not some ominous luck, wishes, stars or leprechauns.

God beats luck any day

God wants us to understand that we must never direct our worship toward anything He has created, or regard it as the source of our life and blessings. Worship only the Creator—never the creation. He is the sole miracle-working God who provides blessings, hopes and a promised future of eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Rainbows, waterfalls, clovers, stars and the rest of the creation were created for us to enjoy and use as a wonderful and beautiful environment to live in. We don't bow down, pray or make requests to any aspect of the creation.

So where are you placing your trust, faith and hope? That's a vital question for each of us.  God's ultimate plan and desire for us is that we live forever in His eternal family and Kingdom: "Now we are children of God … we know that when He [Jesus Christ] is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is" (1 John:3:2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.).

That is the purpose for which we have been created! Luck has nothing to do with it! Wishing wells, wishing on a star or making a wish when blowing out birthday candles simply skew and corrupt our relationship with our Creator.

There is one source of blessings. There is one way into the Kingdom of God. There is one sacrifice that removes the penalty of our personal sins. God alone is that true source—not luck!"  Article by Ed Dowd From: http://www.ucg.org/christian-living/do-you-feel-lucky-today/

Daylight Savings Time: Debating The Costs Of Springing Forward

Daylight Savings

"Daylight saving time in most of the United States started Sunday, March 11 at 2 a.m.   Most Americans lost an hour of sleep as the nation shifted to daylight saving time.

But it could be the most expensive hour of the year. One economist has estimated the cost of shifting that hour forward due to daylight saving time is $1.7 billion dollars a year. That represents just under $3 per American in lost productivity due to clock resetting.

Originally, the time-shifting policy was designed to help save with energy costs and help Americans maximize sunlight hours back when electricity costs were relatively far higher. But today, some economists say the policy is not really helping all that much.   A study showed that the time shift did not reduce energy consumption, so much as displace where and when it was being used. For example, fewer people may need to turn their lights on in the morning when they wake up due to an earlier sunrise, but more people are using air conditioners later in the day as it gets warmer, according to research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2008.

Other studies and reports point to the various problems with losing an hour: There are slightly more traffic accidents on the Monday after the spring forward; people struggle with sleeping schedules; and some television ratings go down."

Texas Bluebonnet Time Again!

Texas Bluebonnet

“No other flower – for me at least – brings such upsurging of the spirit and at the same time such restfulness.” – J. Frank Dobie

"After one of the worst droughts and wildfire seasons in Texas’ history, a sign of renewal is springing up along Texas highways. It is the State Flower of Texas: the bluebonnet.

After the legislators were shown a painting of the blue flower, the bluebonnet stole the show. A resolution making the bluebonnet, specifically the Lupinus subcarnosus, the official state flower of Texas was signed by then-Governor Joseph D. Sayers on March 7, 1901.

Towns across Texas have developed wildflower tours and festivals to showcase their bluebonnets as the best and most colorful in the state. Every April, thousands of visitors flock to the historic cotton town of Chappell Hill for the official “Texas Bluebonnet Festival,” complete with bluebonnet contests and crafts.  I hope this spring we can all pause to enjoy the beauty of our state’s flower. Indeed, the bluebonnet runs wild throughout Texas and deep in our state’s history."   By U.S. Sen. John Cornyn

Amazon.com Confirms New Policy to Ban Sale of Whale and Dolphin Products.  March 8, 2012

Humane Society International.  Whaling is inhumane. Marshall Bruce/istock

"Internet giant Amazon.com has now officially banned the sale of all whale and dolphin products from its wholly owned Japanese website, following global outrage that these products were offered for sale. Amazon confirmed the prohibition on its main website by adding language under the Food and Beverage section that prohibits "Products containing shark, whale, or dolphin" and Amazon’s Japanese website contains a similar ban on selling whale and dolphin products.

The Environmental Investigation Agency and Humane Society International revealed last month that Amazon Japan not only sold products from endangered and protected whale species, but also products containing dangerous levels of mercury."

Trees Down the Toilet

"Maybe you’ve heard that we’re now using more trees for toilet paper than for newsprint. (Not least because the newspaper industry is even more in the toilet than toilet paper.) But did you know that because of Americans’ demand for super-soft TP for our bungholes, 98 percent of the pulp used to make the stuff comes from virgin wood?

“Future generations are going to look at the way we make toilet paper as one of the greatest excesses of our age. Making toilet paper from virgin wood is a lot worse than driving Hummers in terms of global warming pollution,” Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told the Guardian."

"Elsewhere in the world toilet paper – luxury or not – is not a given thing. If you’re supposed to always bring your own roll, believe me you’ll use less.

"At what price softness?" said Tim Spring of paper company Marcal Manufacturing. "Should I contribute to clear-cutting and deforestation because the big [marketing] machine has told me that softness is important?

"The problem is not yet getting better," said Chris Henschel, of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. "It's unbelievable that this global treasure of Canadian boreal forests is being turned into toilet paper. . . . I think every reasonable person would have trouble understanding how that would be okay."

All red meat is risky, a study finds

Eating any amount or type increased the chances of early death among adults tracked more than 20 years.

Eating any amount and any type of red meat increases the risk of premature death, a new study says.

"Eating any amount and any type -- appears to significantly increase the risk of premature death, according to a long-range study that examined the eating habits and health of more than 110,000 adults for more than 20 years.    For instance, adding just one 3-ounce serving of unprocessed red meat -- picture a piece of steak no bigger than a deck of cards -- to one's daily diet was associated with a 13% greater chance of dying during the course of the study.

Even worse, adding an extra daily serving of processed red meat, such as a hot dog or two slices of bacon, was linked to a 20% higher risk of death during the study.  "Any red meat you eat contributes to the risk." "  More at: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/mar/13/health/la-he-red-meat-2012031

Out of bed! Hospitals aim to keep elderly strong

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — "Bob Landorf walked miles during his hospital stay, dragging his IV pole along, too, on a mission to upend disturbing statistics for patients his age.

At least one-third of hospital patients older than 70 leave more frail than when they arrived, and many become too weak to go home. Nursing home care or rehabilitation often are needed, and even then, research suggests more than two-thirds remain weaker a year after being in the hospital.

Elder-care experts challenge the idea that this decline is an inevitable part of growing old. They say conventional hospital care focusing on treating disease rather than preventing frailty contributes to the problem.

Non-medical people say, 'Grandma went to the hospital with pneumonia ... and she was never the same again.'  Pneumonia is a serious illness, but it is treatable" and should not leave patients disabled.   Days of bed rest raise chances for infection, can slow recovery from common conditions in the elderly including pneumonia, and contribute to surprisingly rapid loss of muscle strength in older patients."  More at: http://www.chron.com/default/article/Out-of-bed-Hospitals-aim-to-keep-elderly-strong-3394581.php

The British evacuate Boston, Mar 17, 1776:

"During the American War for Independence, British forces are forced to evacuate Boston following Patriot General George Washington's successful placement of fortifications and cannons on Dorchester Heights, which overlooks the city from the south.

During the evening of March 4, Patriot General John Thomas, under orders from Washington, secretly led a force of 800 soldiers and 1,200 workers to Dorchester Heights and began fortifying the area. To cover the sound of the construction, Patriot cannons, besieging Boston from another location, began a noisy bombardment of the outskirts of the city.  By the morning, more than a dozen cannons from Fort Ticonderoga had been brought within the Dorchester Heights fortifications. British General Sir William Howe hoped to use British ships in Boston Harbor to destroy the Patriot position, but a storm set in, giving the Patriots ample time to complete the fortifications and set up their artillery. On March 17, 11,000 British troops and some 1,000 Royalists departed Boston by ship and sailed to the safety of Halifax, Nova Scotia."

Yesterday:

When I took Misty down to Jay's for her walk, I was roped into trying to get Claudia's s-l-o-w laptop back online, as she had messed up something when she was trying to get Jay's new tablet set up.   She has decided that a desktop takes up too much room.  She knows she needs a new computer, but her AC needs replacing, too.  Resetting the cable modem and the router got it back online.  But that laptop is so slow that I tried to make it faster by defragging and disk cleaning, something they hadn't done.  Waiting for it to do that took ages.  Claudia used computers for an insurance company for years, but it was networked, and the company's computer people took care of all that background stuff, so she has no idea how to keep it running efficiently.   But by the time I had done that, there was no time to work on the cargo trailer yesterday.
