Jesus’ Jewish Heritage

Matthew 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.

"The genealogies of Matthew 1 and Luke 3 give context to the life of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who also was the descendant of Abraham and David. Both David and Jesus were of the tribe of Judah (verse 3), the tribe promised the scepter—the symbol of rulership (Genesis 49:10). As Jesus said, He was born to be a King, and He will rule all nations in the Kingdom of God (John 18:37; Revelation 11:15).

Jesus was ethnically a Jew and grew up with a Jewish heritage. The genealogies help to link the Old and New Testaments into the unified whole that God intended. Though Jesus argued against many human traditions that had grown up around the religion of the Bible, He always showed respect for the inspired writings of what we now call the Old Testament and the laws revealed in it. This only makes sense when you consider that Christ was the “spiritual Rock” that followed and worked with ancient Israel (1 Corinthians 10:4).

From me: As Jesus was a Jew, he went to the synagogue on Saturday, the seventh day of the week, the Sabbath.  It was the Romans who didn't want to have anything to do with anything Jewish who changed the day of worship to Sunday, the first day of the week.  But God didn't change it.

Health Science and the Bible

"The Holy Bible was not written as a medical textbook, but the health advice in it is sound, pivotal and far ahead of its time.

The Bible is concerned more with spiritual soundness than with physical health. Yet surely the God who created us would understand what we need to be healthy. Certainly He would teach us the most important rules for caring for the bodies He designed.

Indeed, God provides sound guidance in the Scriptures to help us achieve the healthiest possible lifestyle.

Let’s see how seven of these biblical health tips stack up with modern medical advice.

1. Practice good hygiene and sanitation.

Deuteronomy 23:12-13: “Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse” (see also Leviticus 11:32; 15:11; Numbers 19:14-15; Job 9:30; and Matthew 23:25-26). 2. Get checked out.

Leviticus 13:2-3: “When a man has on the skin of his body a swelling, a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes on the skin of his body like a leprous sore, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests. The priest shall examine the sore."  More……

3. Stay away from others if you are sick.

Leviticus 13:45-46: “Now the leper on whom the sore is, … his dwelling shall be outside the camp.” More….

4. Be faithful to your spouse.

1 Corinthians 6:18: “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body” (see also Exodus 20:14; Romans 1:27; and Leviticus 18:6). More….

5. Watch what you eat and drink.

…..Eat clean meats only.  According to a 2009 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, consumption of pork consistently correlates with liver disease across countries and over decades of research in epidemiology. Impressively, the strength of the association may be even stronger than the correlation between alcohol and cirrhosis. This pattern does not emerge with beef (a biblically clean meat).

God truly wants what is best for us. Scientists are still learning about factors that make certain meats dangerous choices for humans, but the Bible lit the way long ago.

A little alcohol (up to one or two drinks in a day) can have health benefits. However, the Mayo Clinic warns, “drinking too much alcohol increases your risk of high blood pressure, high triglycerides, liver damage, obesity, certain types of cancer, accidents,” alcoholism and even weakened heart muscle (cardiomyopathy). The Bible does not forbid alcohol, but it clearly shows that alcohol abuse is not only dangerous, it’s sinful. More…..

6. Get adequate rest and exercise.

Ecclesiastes 5:12: “The sleep of a laboring man is sweet” (also see Psalm 127:2 and 1 Timothy 4:8). Modern medicine and the Bible agree: The sedentary, bleary-eyed lifestyle is not good for us. Sleep helps regulate our hormones and immune systems and provides time for cell repair. As a result, sleep-deprivation can make us susceptible to colds, heart disease, diabetes, accidents and even obesity, as WebMD reports. More…..

7. Cultivate a positive outlook.

Proverbs 18:14: “The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?” (see also Proverbs 17:22).

The Bible suggests that attitude affects our physical health. More and more researchers are finding that it’s true! For instance, older adults who expressed only low to moderate levels of satisfaction with their lives were, after eight years, “about 80 percent more likely than their happier counterparts to have developed mobility and functional problems,” as The Washington Post explains.

In contrast, subjects in another study were told to briefly write, once a week, about five things for which they were thankful. After only two months of “gratitude lite,” they felt happier and more optimistic. What’s more, they “reported fewer physical problems and spent more time working out,” according to The New York Times.

Need another reason to be thankful?

Dogs typically lick the fluid right off the ground; kitties are more likely to walk through it, then lick their paws.

The toxic agent in antifreeze is ethylene glycol, and it takes as little as 1 tablespoon to cause acute kidney failure in dogs. Update:

Last Sunday, 16th., Ray and I drove to Houston to buy a used small dishwasher to install in the guest house.  These are the little ones that some people install in RVs.  I have one here in my house and it works well, so I wanted one for the guest house.  The freeways were packed, the weather was horrible, rainy and wet, but it was the only day that we could go.  Sorry, I was too beat to post when I got home. 

Jay and I got a bit more done on the storeroom extension.  Then he came down with a cold.

Ray and I have been busy solving problems.  We are thankful that we have all this behind us.  Ray's brakes went out and he found out that it was a wheel cylinder. 

We had to cut another trapdoor in the floor of Ray's utility room to find a second drain leak.  When we had that slow water leak earlier on in the year, it had washed away some of the support to the house.  That caused a beam to sink and made the two drain leaks.

One night it was going to freeze for the first time this winter, so Ray and I spent the whole afternoon covering and moving plants. The next day it came back up to the mid 70's, so they are uncovered now.  10-day-weather shows that it's not going to freeze again in the next 10 days.  The plants all appreciated the day of rain, and then the sunshine.

Even with the bad weather, I am still selling aloe plants and shipping them north.  But I have to really insulate the packages with newspaper.

Ray's son's power went out during the freeze.  He lives next door on the other side of me, so he stayed with Ray for a couple of days.  Ray and I, armed with a long cord plugged into my house, work lights, flashlights, multimeter and other electrical tools, tried to fix it. This is a rare breaker box and the main breaker has to be removed with a 9mm Allen key.  Now if you have ever bought a set of Allen keys, if you look, you'll find that they don't come with a 9mm!   We went, or called every tool place in town.  Finally, after I looked through five tool boxes here, I found one.  We cleaned the wires with DeOxit, and then figured out that it was the main breaker that was faulty.  Now this is a rare Gould 200 amp breaker and so we had to go to the one and only electrical supply house that carried it.  We were too wary about doing the change-out ourselves and called Jim the mechanic down the street to come and do it.  He did, and so let there be light!

Then I had bought a new door bell, and it wouldn't work every time the button was pushed.  We messed with that thing for ages.  I wrote to the company that made it, and they said it was obsolete so they would send me a new one. Hurray!

Yesterday, Ray and I went to our church's Thanksgiving dinner.  Jay still had the sniffles and a wet cough so even though he wanted to go, he didn't.  The Bible readings were Gen 25:19-28:9, Mal 1:1-2:7.  The teaching was about putting on "The New Man"

Eph 4:24 "and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another. 26 "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you."

The teaching also reminded us to be thankful for everything.  At my age, I am just thankful to wake up this side of the grass!!  We all had a great turkey dinner for the potluck.  I took scalloped sweet potatoes with apple, Craisins and walnuts; and a big dish of mashed rutabagas topped with Parmesan, and some canned cranberry sauce.  Ray helped me by cleaning up my silver cranberry sauce server, so I took that, too.     It was a great day.

"The photo on the cover of PETA's recent Annual Review shows how loving and devoted pigeons are.
In fact, they could teach the "Moral Majority" a thing or two: They mate for life, and both parents share in the care and nurturing of their young. It's not their fault that they were stolen from the cliffs where they lived peacefully and plunked down in the U.S. They are symbols of peace, after all.

Pigeons are among the most maligned urban wildlife, and it's hard to understand why anyone can find fault with these beautiful, fascinating birds. People trap them, poison them, and even force them into endurance races so that the humans involved can win prizes and purses-as Mike Tyson will showcase in an upcoming TV program on Animal Planet called Taking on Tyson.

Pigeons who are penned up for racing-on rooftops or in backyards coops, as viewers will witness in Taking on Tyson-are deliberately put at risk. Taken hundreds of miles from their pens, the birds often struggle to survive in all weather extremes and often fall prey to both wild predators, such as raptors, and cruel humans who shoot or trap them.

I once found a racing pigeon who had crossed the English Channel in a fierce storm, exhausted, no longer able to fly, and almost frozen on the ground. He made it to land from his release point, but others can only have perished, never to see their mates again. And for what? For wagers, that's what, and for trophies. Bets are usually placed on the outcome, which not only violates many state gambling laws but also can mean a grim fate for "losers."

Since pride and profit are often the compelling factors in pigeon racing, owners have little use for pigeons who can't or don't win. "Wring his neck" is what people so often hear when they report a starving or injured banded pigeon. So much for love and respect."

Jay and I went into the next town just to pick up a couple of things. 

My SPCA boss had left a case of canned dog food for Sparky at Petco.

Then we went to the Habitat for Humanity store, (open Fri. and Sat. only), as I still hadn't picked up the big deep drawer that I wanted to install under my small dishwasher.  Jay bought some window screens for his house there.  We had gone armed with the sizes he needed.

I like the Danby dishwasher so much better than my regular size one as I don't have to bend down to load or empty it. Also when the door is open it doesn't take up all the aisle. It uses so much less water, too.

Once we get the pergola finished, maybe we can concentrate on that drawer.

I finally let both foster cats out of the grooming room to see their reaction to Sparky. 

Prime just stayed under the dining table and glowered, but didn't attack.  Sparky barked at her one time and went into my bedroom.  Patches didn't want anything to do with him, and went back in the grooming room.  Prime decided that was a good place to be, and followed her after about 15 minutes.

So the first Prime/Sparky meeting is safely over today.

Just Fixing Things.

It was still chilly this morning, but Ray and I worked with the rain drizzling outside, and the shop doors open. It was the kind of rain where you could rush to the shed to get something and not have to take an umbrella.

We got the Haier dishwasher put back together as a portable, as we had it plumbed into my kitchen until I bought the better one, the Danby. Now it is moved to the "For Sale Dept." in the RVport, so that got it out of the workshop.

I had found a hose that I thought might fit the little Oreck canister vacuum that lost it's hose after the time I paid for it, and before it got in the car. Even when I went back to the resale shop to get the hose, it had never turned up, so they refunded my money and told me to keep the vacuum. The hose fit with a little modification, so that is fixed now. But I am going to put it in the yard sale, as I found a little tiny upright, almost a broomstick, that will do in the grooming room. I had a big awkward shop vac in there for years, and I always disliked it because the exhaust would blow the cut hair everywhere before it could be sucked up, so now I can put that in the "For Sale" Dept., too. Our favorite shop vac around here is the one that the exhaust blows upwards, but the switch has got to be fixed on that. Always something!

We found a leak on the screen porch, and ascertained where it was coming from, so we can fix that, when it isn't raining. Bobbiecat just loves to sit in that corner, but her blankie was getting wet. We have all the parts to make Bobcat a bigger bed for the porch, but the leak is right over it, so we didn't make the bed yet. The one she has now does not give her enough room to lay down stretched out.

Ray sanded a painted side table that is for sale, but it was really too humid to re-paint.

Just a dreary, damp 'fix it' day

Great weather again, but we didn't get any work done. Ray had another job to do, but I picked up Jay.

We called his cell phone company to stop the voice mail feature, as he was getting a bunch of unwanted sales calls on it, using up his minutes. Of course that took some time, as we could hardy understand the customer service man, but their lady rep was a bit better. Jay hasn't figured out how to get to his voice mail messages anyway!

Jay loaded up some vacuums into the Puddle Jumper, that he wanted to put in the yard sale. And we measured for the drawer to go under the dishwasher. He thought he might have a drawer, but his were too wide. I think that I might one have one too. But didn't go over the storeroom to look yet. Now that the space is a lot taller than when the Haier dishwasher was in there, things have changed. But that is as far as we got.

I took Jay and his New In Box computer desk that he had for sale into Conroe, as the folks who wanted to buy it were Spanish speaking. There was no way that I could send them directions how to get here in TexMex. But "WalMart Garden Center at 1.30 pm", is just about understood in any language! They were there, and that was done.

From WalMart we went to a couple of thrift shops. Jay bought some jeans, I bought a cat bed, and a paper towel holder for the TranStar.

I had an appointment at the chiropractor's office for 3.15 pm. But I didn't have to pay him. This was "Adjustment for 5 Cans Day". All the cans are for the Food Bank. I took two bags of canned goods, and even some canned cat and dog food, as they gotta eat, too.

On to Lowes to return some plumbing parts, and get some other items. Then to Kroger's to get a few things there. They even had Pumpkin Egg Nog for 25 cents a half gallon. So I froze some for later. As you have to take the lid off, and empty a tad out before freezing, because of the expansion, I tasted a sample. Nummy!

Vickie, Mom of Bark and Bite, asked me what is up there by that top front window on the TranStar. So here are some pictures.

The sign on the left cabinet door says" The Captain's Word Is Law"! The opening skylight window has never been opened as long as I have owned it, as I didn't want to tempt leaks. That is beige foam board insulation to keep the sun and heat out. So now you can see, how it easy it is to get from the cab to the living area, with no ducking.

Dishwasher Installed. Palmetto Bugs! Dangerous Cords!

Still lovely weather, cool at night, and 70's during the day, so the cats were happy to be on the screen porch.

Not a very exciting day for anyone reading this, but it is for me. Been waiting a long time.

The second little dishwasher, the Danby, is installed and working. So, finally, I could put everything back in the kitchen cabinets. The drain and water hookups are under the sink, and the electrical cord had to be plugged inside the cabinet under the stove top, so those cabinets had their contents all over my dining table!

As you can see my kitchen is narrow, so the door being open on the regular size dishwasher was a pain, hence this change out.

This winter cabin started out being 14' x 34', but was designed so that it could be added on to. That is why the kitchen is so narrow, as my bathroom is behind it. With the current bedroom being a bed-sitter with a hide-a-bed, and a private bathroom. I groomed in the Dog Room, which can be a second bedroom. But when it was expanded into a full time stix and brix, another 22' was added on the front, for a living room, dining room, in the middle, and what I call my Middle Room, the little bathroom, and foyer on one side, then garage on the other. The garage even had a car in it for one night, before it was turned into a workshop. With that big double 42' long RVport on the side, I didn't need to use the garage as a garage. Jay and I had already built the 22' roof on the front, just to keep the sun out, and it was three carports. So the contractors didn't have to do that.

Ray and I debated whether to install the other little dishwasher, the Haier, in their guest house, but decided to wait for a better one like the Danby, or even a Premia, which is a little bit larger.

The next job was to clean out my pet food cabinet in the garage. I usually just have canned food in there, but Kenya had given me several 5lb bags of dry dog food, and I had stupidly, put some of them in there. Well, the Palmetto bugs that usually live in the trees, got a hankering for dry dog food, and had invaded that cabinet. Ray and I took everything out, sprayed with Bengal, which has bug birth control in it, vacuumed, and then washed off all the cans with bleach water. The dry dog food was then transferred to buckets with tight fitting lids, where it should have been all along.

Danger of cords:

Wet Vac To The Rescue. Exploding Pyrex.

The cats enjoyed sunning themselves on the screen porch for most of the day. Our local high for today was over 77 deg.

Ray and I worked on the second little dishwasher, all morning.
We got the parts installed on it, cut a hole in the shelf for the cord to go through, and finally got it on it's shelf and all hooked up.
Ray turned the hot water on, and we got a flood of water out of the dishwasher all over the kitchen floor.

I got the mop bucket, but that wasn't enough, we had to quickly grab a shop vac, take the paper filter out of it to make it into a wet vac, and suck gallons of water off the floor.

We guessed that the float had stuck, and took the impeller off, and really cleaned all the hard water residue off everything with vinegar, and tried it again.

More water came pouring out.

If all else fails, read the directions.

The water inlet and the drain had been mismarked, and so we had the plumbing all bass-ackwards. I had the parts that would hook the water up, in the right place, but needed one more part to hook up the drain, so that meant another trip to the hardware store.

A friend wants me to remind everyone to be careful about exploding Pyrex dishes, especially, it seems, the 13" x 9" pans. "John and Carol had a new PYREX dish blow up in the oven. No one was hurt or major damage done and thankfully they were able to clean up all glass. The mess along with the destroyed dinner went into the trash - at least theirs was self-contained. It could have been very serious. The label may say it is freezer to oven safe, but the fine print does not relay the same info. Be informed - read full story. " www.snopes.com/food/warnings/pyrex.asp As we all remember, this happened to one of the RV-Dreams chatters last holiday season. So please be careful.

Also, How to tell if a mirror in a public area such as a motel, restroom, fitting room etc. is 2-way glass. Simply “Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface – if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the nail image, it is a GENUINE mirror”.
NOTE: If your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE FOR IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! "No Space, Leave the Place."

By the time I had got the parts and a few groceries, it was too late to do any more to the dishwasher today.

Just Odd Jobs. Is it Hunting Season Yet?

Another cold morning, so I didn't let the cats out on the porch until later in the day. 
No rain in sight for the next few days though.
I am glad, as I am making a trip to a suburb of San Antonio on Wednesday.

Jay and I got the Danby dishwasher out of the car and I hooked it to the faucet as a portable, just to try it out.   Boy, now this is what I remember, it sounds like a good strong wash, and drains very well.

Jay hung a new blind in one of the windows, and then suddenly said he was getting picked up by some 'friends' and going to Conroe.  So Ray and I delayed the switch out of the dishwashers as we had other things to do.

There was a non skid pad under the rug in front of my kitchen counters, and it had left marks on my kitchen floor. Ray got it all off, but it took quite a while with some Goof-Off.  I put down a new different kind of non-skid mat under the rug.  I hope this one doesn't leave marks on my lino.  Being height challenged, I can really feel the difference when the mat and rug aren't in place!

Then I reminded Ray where, and what, and when, to feed the cats while I am gone.

There was a piece of plastic coming undone inside the sliding door of the minivan, so we fixed that.

As it was so nice outside, Ray painted the outside work tables, ready for the winter.

Then I struggled with paperwork, and paid some bills.  My health care plan is changing, and I had to make a few calls about that. I have to make decisions and call them in after Nov. 16th, and that will be here before we know it. 

I also cancelled my Good Sam Membership, and ERS after 20 years, and went with Coach Net.

I keep a bag packed with some clothes and toiletries for the RV, but now I will have to reduce the contents to an overnight bag.

In the 70's, low humidity, so very nice day.

Trip To Downtown Houston, What sights!

I like my Haier compact dishwasher, but it doesn’t seem to do as well as another compact one that I had before. There was one for sale, the same brand as my previous one, Danby, on Craigslist, so I wanted to go downtown Houston to see it. If I was going to change, I needed to do it before everything was built in permanently, as this one is wider.

Jay wanted to go with me. It was interesting to see the places that had sprung up on the freeway, as had both of us had lived, and worked, in the rat race of Houston, years ago, but managed to escape.

We had to go through the main part of downtown, between the tall buildings, right over the underground city, with shops and cafes, that no one even suspects is there:

The couple lived on the third floor, no elevator, and brought it down to us:


It has a stainless steel interior, not cheap looking, or feeling, like my Haier, and more settings. It was immaculate, just like new, so I bought it.

I was tired when I got home, but still did two loads of laundry, but now I have to fold them, if I want to get into my bed!!
