Research Finds Spayed & Neutered Dogs Live Longer

sterilized-dogs-live-longer-7-510x600[1] “New research from the University of Georgia has found that spaying and neutering your canine companions could lengthen the lives of your pets.

Pet owners are encouraged to sterilize their dogs in an effort to help control the pet population; however, the study is now suggesting that the procedure is also good for a dog's overall health.

Researchers looked at a sample of 40,139 death records from the Veterinary Medical Database from 1984–2004. They determined that the average age of death for dogs that had not been spayed or neutered was 7.9 years vs. 9.4 years for dogs that had been sterilized.

  • Neutered male cats live 62 percent longer than unneutered ones.
  • Spayed female cats live 39 percent longer than unspayed ones.
  • Neutered male dogs live 18 percent longer than unneutered ones.
  • Spayed female dogs live 24 percent longer than unspayed ones.”   More at: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/spayneuter/spay-neuter-top-ten.aspx

The Bear” trailer

Film Review: “Storytelling doesn't get much purer than this--a film with virtually no dialogue and not a minute that isn't fascinating, either for the plot it pursues or the way director Jean-Jacques Annaud gets his ursine stars to do what he wants. The story deals with a young cub who, after his mother is killed in a landslide, bonds to a lumbering male Kodiak. The two of them then must cope with an invasion of hunters into their territory--and Annaud makes it clear whose side he's on. Aside from stunning scenery, the film offers startlingly close-up looks at bear behavior. They say the best actors are the ones that let you see what they're thinking, a trick Annaud manages with his big, furry stars.” --Marshall Fine
“The Bear has all the marks of a classic. Lauded by animal rights groups for its respect for the integrity of all species, it manages to speak out eloquently against the senseless hunting of wildlife without having to depict killing to make its point. Instead, it emphasizes the ties that bind the human and animal worlds together.” --Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

Otter Pups Swim Lesson

“You've probably noticed that otters seem almost as home in the water as most fish. But, did you know that otters have to be taught how to swim? Otter pups aren't born with any innate knowledge of how to swim or handle themselves in the water. And since otters depend on water to survive, mom has to teach her babies how to be as home in the water as they are on land.”

President Adams settles in new capital, Jun 3, 1800:

“John Adams, the second president of the United States, becomes the first president to reside in Washington, D.C., when he takes up residence at Union Tavern in Georgetown.

The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation's capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. French architect Charles L'Enfant designed the city's radical layout, full of dozens of circles, crisscross avenues, and plentiful parks. In 1792, work began on the neoclassical White House building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue under the guidance of Irish-American architect James Hoban, whose White House design was influenced by Leinster House in Dublin and by a building sketch in James Gibbs' Book of Architecture.

On June 3, 1800, President Adams moved to a temporary residence in the new capital as construction was completed on the executive mansion. On November 1, the president was welcomed into the White House. The next day, Adams wrote to his wife about their new home: "I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house, and on all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but wise men ever rule under this roof!"

The mansion was enlarged under the direction of James Hoban, who added east and west terraces to the main building along with a semicircular south portico and a colonnaded north portico.  Work was completed on the White House in the 1820s and it has remained largely unchanged since.”

Yesterday:

As usual, my sinuses woke me up around 4.00am, when I was all clogged up and it was making me cough.  Then I heard thunder and rain.  A little while later the power went out.  Armed with flashlights and stick-up lights, I boiled water on my propane stove, and poured it over ground coffee to try to make coffee.  It was only OK.  It was raining too hard to go out to the motor home to get the ‘gas’ percolator.  As it was raining so hard and Misty had to go out, I put her raincoat on her, only then would she go out in the rain.  She really likes her raincoat. I had gone to bed early the night before, so I knew she couldn’t wait.

Quickly, I got the critter’s food out of the fridge and fed them, but they knew something wasn’t right.  Even the animals missed the electricity.  I plugged the phone cord into my laptop, and tried to use it on Dial-Up, but it was so slow that it was just aggravating.  To think that was all I had a few years ago!!  The power come on a few hours hours later.  One room was vacuumed, when Jay arrived on his ATV with Maddie the Yorkie.  He wanted me to clip some hair off her tummy as it kept on getting wet in the grass, so that’s what I did.  He is very mad at himself for going back to drinking.

I was really tired and lay down for a while, when the power went off again.  I was supposed to be getting ready to go to a wedding, but gave up on that.  I didn’t want to start coughing during the ceremony.  I tried to rest some more till the power came back on, but I had to take my foster cats to Conroe Petco.  So I put them in their carriers, and Ray’s son put Simba’s in my van. That cat is too heavy for me, but I could manage Nila’s.

SPCA-Cat- Habitat Nila cried all the way to town, and didn’t settle down until we got there.  A Petco customer got Simba’s carrier out of the van for me, as Kenya was late.

While we waited, I had each carrier in a shopping cart by the window at Petco, and let them watch the world go by.

Then we, the cats and I, had to wait until Kenya had the top area of the habitat cleaned, then bleached, with new blankies and toys, ready for it’s new inhabitants.  I would have helped, but you know how it is when you have a routine, it would have thrown her off.  Simba got nasty again when he was put in there.  He gets upset with any changes, and so Kenya put a cover over the Plexiglas door, so he could chill out.

Simba and Nila will be there for a month, or less if adopted in that time.  I hope they get ‘furever’ homes, as if not, they will be back here.  Gentle little Nila is alright, but humongous Simba gets into my tools in the Grooming Room, and knocks things down.  He can open plastic buckets to get to cat food, so I have to keep it in the house.

When I got home the very first thing I did was empty the cat boxes, take them through to the workshop sink and soak them in bleach water.  Maybe I’ll find out if my sinus problems are from cats in a few days.

“Accursed!” Dealing With Conflict. When You Apologize. God's Purpose Is Not Thwarted. Sanctity of Life. Civil War Ends. Queen Elizabeth II.

For “Scripture Sunday:”

We Can’t Earn It

An Amazing Fact: The apostle Paul’s 35 years of travels took him through Turkey, Greece, Rome, and, of course, Israel and Palestine. Sometimes he journeyed by ship (he was shipwrecked three times!) and sometimes by foot. During his five missionary trips, he traveled a total of 13,000 miles.

When Paul wrote his letter to the Galatians, he told them plainly that if anyone tried to preach a different gospel to them, that person should be accursed”—even if it was him or an angel. That was strong language, but Paul needed to get their attention. He had taught them salvation by faith in Christ alone, but someone had been teaching the Galatians something quite different, telling them they needed to do certain other things in order to be saved.

The gospel Paul had preached, he reminded them, was not something he had made up. No human taught or gave him the gospel. He says, “It came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.” After Paul’s conversion, Jesus Himself revealed the gospel to him.
There is only one gospel. At its core are Jesus Christ and His sacrifice, which reconciles us to God through faith. Nothing we can do could ever earn the salvation that He gives to us as a free gift.”

KEY BIBLE TEXTS
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. - Galatians 1:8
But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. - Galatians 1:11-12

Nine Lessons for Dealing With Conflict

“Jesus said, "Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called the sons of God." Everyone agrees with the concept, but how can we practice peacemaking? Sometimes it seems like you can't get through a day without experiencing conflict with a family member, neighbor, co-worker or a stranger on the subway.

The book of Proverbs contains many practical steps of basic conflict resolution.

1. The most important step in dealing with conflict is to understand that when you are at peace with God it is easier to make peace with others.

Proverbs 16:7: "When a man's ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him."

2. Once an argument begins it tends to escalate into anger and irrational behavior.

Proverbs 17:14: "The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts."

3. Many times we emotionally respond to what someone is saying without hearing the entire story.

Proverbs 18:13: "He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him."

4. When dealing with conflicts between other people, listen to both sides before making any judgment.

Proverbs 18:17: "The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him."

5. Dealing with conflict in the early stages is much easier.

Proverbs 18:19: "A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle."

6. Responding in anger is like throwing gasoline on a fire.

Proverbs 17:9: "He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends."

Proverbs 19:11: "The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression."

7. Some issues aren't worth fighting over.

Proverbs 20:3: "It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel."

Proverbs 17:28: "Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive."

8. Conflict is fanned by gossip.

Proverbs 16:28: "A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends."

Proverbs 17:9: "He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends."

9. Carefully and objectively examine your position before you enter into an argument.

Proverbs 25:8-10: "Do not go hastily to court; For what will you do in the end, When your neighbor has put you to shame? Debate your case with your neighbor, And do not disclose the secret to another; Lest he who hears it expose your shame, And your reputation be ruined."

Application

Post these nine principles in a prominent place so that they are a constant reminder of how to conduct conflict resolution.

Before dealing with conflict first pray to God to help you see your part in causing the strife, ask for forgiveness for both you and the other person and seek peace with your Creator. Then you will have the inner strength to be a real peacemaker.”  From: http://www.ucg.org/blog/life-lessons-nine-lessons-dealing-conflict/

Forward: The Power of Apology

“In conflicts, apologizing when you've done wrong can go a long way in making things better.

Six things to remember when you apologize.

In my work I sometimes have to mediate when there are disagreements between people. Most conflicts get resolved person to person, but as we’ve all experienced, sometimes it takes a third party to help work out differences.

Sometimes matters escalate when people stand by their “integrity” and feel that they are “right” about the way they handled themselves in a conflict, when in fact they said or did things that were hurtful. This increases unpleasant feelings and can lead to bitterness and worse.

While we try to informally mediate and listen to sometimes voluminous conflicting accounts of incidents or issues, we wonder what the best path out of the conflict is. And how will it be possible for two or more people who occupy the same home live peaceably with one another? This includes relationships between those in the ministry and in the membership.

The shortest solution is often to apologize for your part in whatever the dispute is. It may be an oversimplification, but it’s one way to speed up a quick mending of fences. The longer an issue persists, the harder it is to get feelings straightened out.

But wait! Saying you’re sorry must be done properly to have its healing effect. Clumsy and patronizing apologies such as “I’m sorry you feel that way,” or “I’m sorry if I…” only drive the hurt deeper.

What really works is a sincere apology for whatever it is that we contribute to a dispute. It may even have a “heaping coals of fire effect” (Romans 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. See All...) on those who may be against us and could even be “enemies.”

When apologizing, do the following:

1.    Acknowledge specifically what you did to aggravate a situation. Don’t be vague, which has the other party guessing.

2.    Take responsibility for the hurt or damage done. Make sure the other party knows that you recognize your role in the event.

3.    Express sincere regret for the matter. “We should have never let it get to this point. Our relationship is more important than the dispute.”

4.    Ask for forgiveness. This is not easy for us to do, but it’s an absolutely necessary part of the healing and effectiveness of apologizing.

5.    Promise that it won’t happen again. Show the other party that you are repentant and are making a change in your character.

6.    Make restitution or take concrete steps to make amends if possible.

Apologizing is both easy and hard. The steps above are quite straightforward. But having the will and courage to make yourself vulnerable to someone who may not accept your apology is another matter. The prime blocker to apologizing in the above manner is pride. That’s where positive Christian behavior and doing the right thing stalls. And persistent pride leads only to an escalation. God has called us to live in peace. The apostle Paul opened many of his epistles, “Grace and peace be to you.” Peace comes when we work for it, and constructive efforts such as a simple “I’m sorry,” supported by a sincere desire to live at peace and to keep it that way, make great strides toward that peace.

Is there someone you can apologize to sincerely today? It could take one more of the burdens of life off your shoulders as we walk our Christian journey.”  From: http://www.ucg.org/christian-living/forward-power-apology/ By Victor Kubik

God's Purpose Is Not Thwarted

A woman on a dock looking up to the sky.

Source: Photos.com

“When we began work on the current issue of The Good News , the cover story wasn't immediately settled. It was either going to be the horror of abortion, as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision that sanctioned the murder of unborn children, or it was going to be the broader subject of the great value of human life, considering the supreme purpose for which human beings exist. We went with the latter, being the more encompassing and uplifting story, but the abortion issue would remain an important theme in the issue.

I thought again about the wonder and obvious design of the creation all around us. And I was brought to ask anew: Is there not clearly a point to it all beyond just something to behold? Some have come to the bleak conclusion that life is ultimately meaningless—or, slightly less hopeless, that we create our own meaning. Yet the intricate interrelationships between created things throughout the world and the broader universe demonstrate that God has designed with purpose. Moreover, as we reflect on human history and life stories of individuals, including our own experiences, we can see great lessons taught and learned—with all too many spurned or forgotten. Still the story continues, and it is surely leading somewhere.

As Winston Churchill, Britain's prime minister during World War II, eloquently stated, "He must indeed have a blind soul who cannot see that some great purpose and design is being worked out here below." Thankfully, the Bible reveals that awesome purpose. It is transcendent and glorious beyond our wildest imaginings.

In the meantime, humanity at large gropes blindly—refusing to follow and believe the light of God's Word. I was appalled to see the news about U.S. President Barack Obama addressing Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider. The first sitting president to do so, he was received with enthusiastic applause. "'Everybody sit down,' Obama said sheepishly. 'You're making me blush'" (WashingtonExaminer.com, April 26, 2013). And then there was this: "'I want you to know that you've also got a president who's going to be right there with you, fighting every step of the way,' said Obama. 'Thank you, Planned Parenthood. God bless you'" (WeeklyStandard.com, April 26).

The leader of the United States invoking God to bless the efforts of those who take the lives of His created children? Words fail.”

On This Day:

American Civil War ends, Jun 2, 1865:

“In an event that is generally regarded as marking the end of the Civil War, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi, signs the surrender terms offered by Union negotiators. With Smith's surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history.

The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate shore batteries under General Pierre G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay. During 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort, and on April 13 U.S. Major Robert Anderson, commander of the Union garrison, surrendered. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to help quell the Southern "insurrection." Four long years later, the Confederacy was defeated at the total cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate dead.”

Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Jun 2, 1953:

“On June 2, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II is formally crowned monarch of the United Kingdom in a lavish ceremony steeped in traditions that date back a millennium. After the ceremony, millions of rain-drenched spectators cheered the 27-year-old queen and her husband, the 30-year-old duke of Edinburgh, as they passed along a five-mile procession route in a gilded horse-drawn carriage.”

Yesterday:

My daughter didn’t have but a minute for our Saturday phone call, as she was packing up the last of their stuff from their house in West Columbia, TX to take to their lake house at Somerville.  Their house is sold and closes on the 7th.  My grandson graduated last Friday from the school at West Columbia, and is going to apply for the Air Force.  Now they start their new life at the lake.

Ray and I have been wetting down the new gravel to try to make it settle, so I am not driving on it yet.

The Bible Study at the Willis Church of God was about Knowledge, Wisdom, and Character.  It showed the example of how Lt. Colombo would ask a question to get the other person talking.  Such as “ What do You Mean By That?”, as it is good to know why the other person is thinking the way they do.  Then you can gently guide the dialogue into a more spiritually productive direction with additional questions.

As the pastor’s daughter is getting married today, his sermon was about “Becoming A Power Couple”.  Not like Brad and Jolie, or the Clintons, but about Agape Love, Humility and Self-Sacrifice.  Some examples in the Bible are Abraham and Sarah, and Boaz and Ruth. Interesting, even for those like me who no longer have a spouse.

Heavy rains came during the early morning, even knocking the power out for hours, so we won’t have to wet down the gravel today.

Backwards Parents? Vaccines. Pacifiers. Sleep Apnea? 7-Minute Workout. Strip Poker. Jews at Chelmno. CNN Launches.

For “Summary Saturday”, News, Some New, Some Old:

We are all devastated by the weather disasters around the country, and the death of the fire fighters in Houston.  The news is full of it, so I won’t go into it.

So I’ll talk about our most precious resource, kids, instead!

Have American Parents Got It All Backwards?

“The eager new mom offering her insouciant toddler an array of carefully-arranged healthy snacks from an ice cube tray?

That was me.

The always-on-top-of-her-child's-play parent intervening during play dates at the first sign of discord?

That was me too.

We hold some basic truths as self-evident when it comes to good parenting. Our job is to keep our children safe, enable them to fulfill their potential and make sure they're healthy and happy and thriving.

The parent I used to be and the parent I am now both have the same goal: to raise self-reliant, self-assured, successful children. But 12 years of parenting, over five years of living on and off in Japan, two years of research, investigative trips to Europe and Asia and dozens of interviews with psychologists, child development experts, sociologists, educators, administrators and parents in Japan, Korea, China, Finland, Germany, Sweden, France, Spain, Brazil and elsewhere have taught me that though parents around the world have the same goals, American parents like me (despite our very best intentions) have gotten it all backwards.

Why?

We need to let 3-year-olds climb trees and 5-year-olds use knives.

Imagine my surprise when I came across a kindergartener in the German forest whittling away on a stick with a penknife. His teacher, Wolfgang, lightheartedly dismissed my concern: "No one's ever lost a finger!"

Similarly, Brittany, an American mom, was stunned when she moved her young family to Sweden and saw 3- and 4-year-olds with no adult supervision bicycling down the street, climbing the roofs of playhouses and scaling tall trees with no adult supervision. The first time she saw a 3-year-old high up in a tree at preschool, she started searching for the teacher to let her know. Then she saw another parent stop and chat with one of the little tree occupants, completely unfazed. It was clear that no one but Brittany was concerned.

"I think of myself as an open-minded parent," she confided to me, "and yet here I was, wanting to tell a child to come down from a tree."

Why it's better: Ellen Hansen Sandseter, a Norwegian researcher at Queen Maud University in Norway, has found in her research that the relaxed approach to risk-taking and safety actually keeps our children safer by honing their judgment about what they're capable of. Children are drawn to the things we parents fear: high places, water, wandering far away, dangerous sharp tools. Our instinct is to keep them safe by childproofing their lives. But "the most important safety protection you can give a child," Sandseter explained when we talked, "is to let them take... risks."

Consider the facts to back up her assertion: Sweden, where children are given this kind of ample freedom to explore (while at the same time benefitting from comprehensive laws that protect their rights and safety), has the lowest rates of child injury in the world.

Children can go hungry from time-to-time.

In Korea, eating is taught to children as a life skill and as in most cultures, children are taught it is important to wait out their hunger until it is time for the whole family to sit down together and eat. Koreans do not believe it's healthy to graze or eat alone, and they don't tend to excuse bad behavior (like I do) by blaming it on low blood sugar. Instead, children are taught that food is best enjoyed as a shared experience. All children eat the same things that adults do, just like they do in most countries in the world with robust food cultures. (Ever wonder why ethnic restaurants don't have kids' menus?). The result? Korean children are incredible eaters. They sit down to tables filled with vegetables of all sorts, broiled fish, meats, spicy pickled cabbage and healthy grains and soups at every meal.

Why it's better: In stark contrast to our growing child overweight/obesity levels, South Koreans enjoy the lowest obesity rates in the developed world. A closely similar-by-body index country in the world is Japan, where parents have a similar approach to food.

Instead of keeping children satisfied, we need to fuel their feelings of frustration.

The French, as well as many others, believe that routinely giving your child a chance to feel frustration gives him a chance to practice the art of waiting and developing self-control. Gilles, a French father of two young boys, told me that frustrating kids is good for them because it teaches them the value of delaying gratification and not always expecting (or worse, demanding) that their needs be met right now.

Why it's better: Studies show that children who exhibit self-control and the ability to delay gratification enjoy greater future success.  Anecdotally, we know that children who don't think they're the center of the universe are a pleasure to be around. Alice Sedar, Ph.D., a former journalist for Le Figaro and a professor of French Culture at Northeastern University, agrees. "Living in a group is a skill," she declares, and it's one that the French assiduously cultivate in their kids.”

Sucking Babies' Pacifiers for Allergy Prevention? - Ask Dr. Weil

Q: “I just heard that parents are now supposed to suck babies’ pacifiers to clean them. This sounds really unhygienic to me. Wouldn’t the parents be passing on their germs?”

imagesCASAY9T2 Answer:  “Strange as it may seem, the practice of sucking your baby's pacifier to clean it – most commonly after it has dropped on the floor – may protect children from developing allergies and asthma later in life. This news comes from Swedish researchers who followed 184 babies for three years, examining them periodically for allergy symptoms. The parents were asked to keep records of when they introduced new foods into the babies' diets, when the children were weaned, and other child-rearing practices.

The study showed that at 18-months of age, the children whose parents reported sucking pacifiers to clean them had one-third the risk of developing eczema than babies whose parents cleaned pacifiers some other way. (Infantile eczema is the most common early sign of allergy.) By the time the children turned three, eczema developed significantly less often among babies whose parents sucked on pacifiers to clean them during the infants' first six months of life.

While the study didn't prove that exposure to parental saliva was responsible for the lower rate of allergies, the findings conform to the "hygiene hypothesis," which holds that children who grow up in less sanitary environments are less likely to develop allergies and asthma than youngsters raised in cleaner, more protected ones. The idea is that the developing immune systems of less privileged kids are exposed to more germs from an early age and become stronger as a result.”  More at: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA401290/Sucking-Babies-Pacifiers-for-Allergy-Prevention.html

Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea“A simple test you can perform to check whether or not you're breathing properly is to stand with your back against a wall, with your heels, buttocks, shoulder blades and head touching the wall. Say "Hello," swallow, and then breathe.

If you can speak, swallow, and breathe easily and comfortably in this position, then your mouth and throat are clear. If you cannot perform those three functions, your breathing is probably obstructed, which may be exacerbated when lying down to sleep.”  More at: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/09/24/speech-therapy-for-sleep-apnea.aspx

The Scientific 7-Minute Workout: Enough Pain?

“I finished my scientific seven-minute workout as the clock hit 7 a.m. While I sipped on my home-made fruit, spinach and protein powder smoothie, I tried to convince myself that I had just finished a work out equivalent to running my usual three miles around the reservoir, followed by a full weight routine. Call me neurotic, but I'm not buying into the whole "seven-minutes is as good as an hour" thing. Are you?”  More at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ronna-benjamin/7-minute-workout_b_3310257.html

On This Day:

News of death camp killings becomes public for first time, Jun 1, 1942:

“On this day in 1942, a Warsaw underground newspaper, the Liberty Brigade, makes public the news of the gassing of tens of thousands of Jews at Chelmno, a death camp in Poland—almost seven months after extermination of prisoners began.

A year earlier, the means of effecting what would become the "Final Solution," the mass extermination of European Jewry, was devised: 700 Jews were murdered by channeling gas fumes back into a van used to transport them to the village of Chelmno, in Poland. This "gas van" would become the death chamber for a total of 360,000 Jews from more than 200 communities in Poland. The advantage of this form of extermination was that it was silent and invisible.

One month before the infamous Wannsee Conference of January 1942, during which Nazi officials decided to address formally the "Jewish question," the gas vans in Chelmno were used to kill up to 1,000 Jews a day. The vans provided the "Final Solution" for Adolf Eichmann and other Wannsee attendees. The mass gassings were the most orderly and systematic means of eliminating European Jewry. Eventually, more such vans were employed in other parts of Poland. There was no thought of selecting out the "fit" from the "unfit" for slave labor, as in Auschwitz. There was only one goal: utter extermination.

On June 1, 1942, the story of a young Jew, Emanuel Ringelblum, (who escaped from the Chelmno death camp after being forced to bury bodies as they were thrown out of the gas vans), was published in the underground Polish Socialist newspaper Liberty Brigade. The West now knew the "bloodcurdling news... about the slaughter of Jews," and it had a name—Chelmno.”

CNN launches, Jun 1, 1980:

“On this day in 1980, CNN (Cable News Network), the world's first 24-hour television news network, makes its debut. The network signed on at 6 p.m. EST from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, with a lead story about the attempted assassination of civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. CNN went on to change the notion that news could only be reported at fixed times throughout the day. At the time of CNN's launch, TV news was dominated by three major networks--ABC, CBS and NBC--and their nightly 30-minute broadcasts. Initially available in less than two million U.S. homes, today CNN is seen in more than 89 million American households and over 160 million homes internationally.

CNN was the brainchild of Robert "Ted" Turner, a colorful, outspoken businessman dubbed the "Mouth of the South." Turner was born on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and as a child moved with his family to Georgia, where his father ran a successful billboard advertising company. After his father committed suicide in 1963, Turner took over the business and expanded it. In 1970, he bought a failing Atlanta TV station that broadcast old movies and network reruns and within a few years Turner had transformed it into a "superstation," a concept he pioneered, in which the station was beamed by satellite into homes across the country. Turner later bought the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the Atlanta Hawks basketball team and aired their games on his network, TBS (Turner Broadcasting System). In 1977, Turner gained international fame when he sailed his yacht to victory in the prestigious America's Cup race.

In its first years of operation, CNN lost money and was ridiculed as the Chicken Noodle Network. However, Turner continued to invest in building up the network's news bureaus around the world and in 1983, he bought Satellite News Channel, owned in part by ABC, and thereby eliminated CNN's main competitor. CNN eventually came to be known for covering live events around the world as they happened, often beating the major networks to the punch. The network gained significant traction with its live coverage of the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and the network's audience grew along with the increasing popularity of cable television during the 1990s.

In 1996, CNN merged with Time Warner, which merged with America Online four years later. Today, Ted Turner is an environmentalist and peace activist whose philanthropic efforts include a 1997 gift of $1 billion to the United Nations.”

Yesterday:

Jay really wanted me to take him to cash his check in Willis, and then take him to Conroe to re-up that stupid PayDay type loan that he has.  That was a sure sign that he is drinking again.  Over the last 3 months he has paid interest nearly as much as he borrowed. ($41 a month for a $250 loan.) During the few days when he wasn’t drinking, he was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and a pleasure to be around.  He kept on saying how well and happy he felt, and that he was going to pay it off.  So much for that.

As the man was coming to dump a load of gravel in my driveway, and I was here by myself, I had to get everything out of the way. There was a long water hose to undo and wrap up.  A cable for the antenna had to be disconnected up in the guest house attic and rolled up out of the way.  We had left some indoor-outdoor carpet pieces in the area in case it rained so it wouldn’t be muddy, and I had to pull them out of that area.  I also dragged some big heavy planks, and got it all moved until I was breathless again.

Walkway-Misty-PacoI carried some Hardi-plank siding over there and put it up against the outside of the lattice fence, so none of the rocks would spill over onto the walkway to the back yard.  Blind old Misty wouldn’t have understood what was going on in her little walkway, if I hadn’t done that.  She guides herself by the feel of the brick pathway, and the landscape timber sides keep her going straight.

The dump truck wouldn’t fit between the two houses where the driveway needed to be, and when he imagesCAFBOL7Q tipped up the bed, it barely missed the roof of the guest house and my roof.  It wasn’t the usual ratty looking dump truck, this was a pretty, polished, beige Mac with bulldogs on the front and on the mirrors.  I missed taking a picture of it.

I had told Jay that I would take him to Willis when I went to the bank to get the man’s money.  The man, Mike, was going to come back with his front-end loader to spread the gravel, so I had just enough time to run into Willis.  I couldn’t get a hold of Jay by phone to tell him that the man was here dumping the gravel, so I quickly drove down there.  But Jay was mean and nasty because I couldn’t take him to Conroe.  He barked that he would get his mother to take him.  I pitied her, the mood that Jay was in.

When Mike came back with the front-end loader, he was very careful and conscientious, and did a really good job of smoothing it all out.  Some had to be done with a rake, and I felt bad about that, as Mike has a bad back.

I was talking to the foster mom of Holly, (the cat that I never saw while she was here, the one that wouldn’t eat), and she has another declawed cat that is outgoing and a “greeter”.  On Sunday, I will be taking Simba and Nila to stay at our Cat Habitat, and while I am cat-less I will see if my sinus problems clear up.  If they don’t, then I might as well have a cat!

This foster mom also said that she wants to go to church with me next week, that will be great.

Jay’s mother had heard him talking nastily to me and got on to him about it, and I doubt if he will be going to church today.
