Afghanistan Deaths: August Is Deadliest Month Ever For U.S. Troops

Afghanistan Deaths

KABUL, Afghanistan -- "August has become the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the nearly 10-year-old war in Afghanistan, where international forces have started to go home and let Afghan forces take charge of securing their country.

A record 66 U.S. troops have died so far this month, eclipsing the 65 killed in July 2010, according to a tally by The Associated Press.

Aside from the 30 Americans killed in the Chinook crash, southwest of Kabul, 23 died this month in Kandahar and Helmand provinces in southern Afghanistan, the main focus of Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces. The remaining 13 were killed in eastern Afghanistan.

Besides the 66 Americans killed so far this month, the NATO coalition suffered the loss of two British, four French, one New Zealander, one Australian, one Polish and five other troops whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed. One of the five was killed in a roadside bombing Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, the coalition said. No other details were released.

So far this year, 403 international service members, including at least 299 Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan."

Irene causes Lower Bartonsville Covered Bridge to collapse into the Williams River in Vermont

"This covered bridge built in 1870 could not survive the raging water of the Williams River in Lower Bartonsville village in the town of Rockingham, Windham County, VT. We were hoping all day the water would not reach the top of the abutment but the bridge lost its battle rather gracefully as it floated a bit down stream before breaking into pieces.
Our town has set up a fund to rebuild our historic bridge go to http://www.rockbf.org for more information."

Threw son overboard:

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- 8/29/11.  "A Southern California man was arrested after authorities say he threw his crying 7-year-old son off a sightseeing cruise boat during an argument that shocked passengers on the boat.

Sloan Briles, 35, his girlfriend and two sons from a previous marriage went on an afternoon cruise around Newport Harbor on a boat carrying 85 people. Briles argued with the girlfriend and then with his 7-year-old son before throwing the boy overboard, the child was not an expert swimmer.

"The father hit him several times and then threatened to throw him overboard if he didn't stop crying," Amormino said. "The crowd on the boat became very angry at the father for hitting the kid and extremely angry when he threw him overboard."

The boy was rescued by another boater, and the father also jumped in to save him. The boy and his brother were returned to their mother's care."

Michael Vick Contract: Not Worth $100 Million As Originally Reported

"When news broke on Monday night that Michael Vick had signed a six-year deal worth $100 million, it ignited a firestorm of stories about the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback. In some, he was celebrated for regaining his place among the game's top players. In others, he was derided for the crimes that forced him away from the field for so long.

When it came to this controversial figure, it seemed the only thing that everyone could agree on was that Vick was going to get paid $100 million.

Well, it turns out that those financial figures may have also been the only thing that everyone got wrong.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reports that Vick's deal is really only for five years as the sixth year is voided if he completes more than 35% of the team's snaps in any year of the deal. That brings the deals total value down to $80 million.

Vick was declared an “exclusive” franchise player in February and agreed to a one-year deal that will pay him at least $16 million for 2011.

Sporting News named Vick its NFL Comeback Player of the Year for 2010.

Vick missed the 2007 and 2008 seasons after pleading guilty to federal dogfighting charges and serving a two-year prison sentence. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Vick for the first two games of the 2009 season. "

Is Your Bag Hurting Your Back?

"Carrying around pounds of possessions jammed in a heavy bag can lead to disabling back pain symptoms. Choosing the best bag for your back — and wearing it the right way — can help you avoid that pain.

bags can cause back pain

We're a nation obsessed with stuff, and today we're carrying around more and more of it in our backpacks, briefcases, computer bags, and purses. The result — back pain.

"It's an epidemic," says Scott Bautch, DC, "The number one disabler of people 45 and younger in this country is lower back pain."

When Dr. Bautch talks to people about bags and back pain causes, he asks them to empty their own bags. And they pull out pounds and pounds of stuff — several water bottles, three or four books, sets of keys they thought were lost, $20 in coins.

People are also carrying much more technology than ever before, from smartphones to laptops. "They seem like little things, but they add weight," Bautch says.

Avoiding Back Pain Symptoms

The next time you head out the door with a bag, try these ideas to lighten your load and spare your back:

  • Pick the smallest bag you can. The bigger the bag, the more you put in it, Bautch says. Do yourself a favor and carry the smallest bag filled with only what you really need and leave the rest at home. Keep in mind that it's usually not one single item that leads to back pain symptoms, explains Bautch. More likely, it's the accumulation of smaller items, such as loads of loose change, that causes pain.
  • Aim for symmetry. Putting extra weight on one side of your body is one of the biggest back pain causes. Any time you carry weight on one side of your body for an extended period of time, it causes your spine to curve, and that leads to back pain symptoms, Bautch says.
  • With that in mind, it's better to choose a messenger bag that you wear diagonally across your body rather than a single-strap bag that rests on one shoulder.
  • Designate different bags for different uses. Rather than trying to carry everything in one bag, designate a briefcase for business, a gym bag for exercise clothes, another bag for your kids' items, and so on.
  • Aim to carry less than 10 percent of your body weight. Ideally, you shouldn't carry around more than 10 percent of your body weight, so put your bag on a scale and see how it measures up. If it's too heavy, see if there's anything you can do without.

The best thing you can do for your back is to be a minimalist. Don't carry what you don't have to, but when you need to take a bag with you, choose the right one and wear it the proper way to eliminate back pain causes.

Russia approves tunnel to Alaska under Bering Strait

Bering Strait

"The Russian government has given the go-ahead on an ambitious new tunnel project that could connect Siberia with Alaska via an underground rail line. If completed, the $65 billion project will be the longest underwater tunnel in the world, besting the Chunnel between England and France by twice the distance. The planned course would stretch over 65 miles and would snake beneath the Big and Little Diomede Islands.

According to Inhabitat, the project will be funded by a private and public partnership. So why build it?
Aside from being a civil engineering marvel, the tunnel would also provide an efficient way to move 100 million tons of freight per year. In addition, the tunnel could provide an easy transmission route for electricity developed by tidal energy stations and wind plants in Russia to Alaska and Canada. In addition, the rail system would complete a high-speed network that could stretch from London to New York City. Unfortunately, the project doesn't seem to be geared toward passenger travel. At least, not for now. From:

Drama from Mother Nature as Sicily's Mount Etna volcano erupts, spewing out ash and shooting lava into the air.

"According to the Osservatorio Vulcanologico dell’Etna: “On the early morning of 29 August 2011, the 12th paroxysmal eruptive episode of this year occurred at the New Southeast Crater, almost 8 days after its predecessor. This event generated tall lava fountains and an eruption column that caused ash falls in the southeast sector of the volcano, as well as various lava flows down the western slope of the Valle del Bove.

“During this paroxysm, the southeastern flank of the pyroclastic cone of the New Southeast Crater fractured, with the opening of several eruptive vents down to the base of the cone, which produced lava fountains and a broad lava flow that advanced to the Valle del Bove, too. The acme of this episode lasted less than 40 minutes.” "

"Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity. On  12-13 January 2011 lava fountaining occurred from the vent on the east flank of Etna’s Southeast Crater cone, lasting more than 1.5 hours. Italian Authorities were forced to temporarily close airports for a couple of hours while the ash cloud cleared."

Highest-Paid CEOs Often Earn More Than Company Pays In Income Taxes, Study Finds

WASHINGTON - "Twenty-five of the 100 highest paid U.S. CEOs earned more last year than their companies paid in federal income tax, a pay study said on Wednesday.

It also found many of the companies spent more on lobbying than they did on taxes.

At a time when lawmakers are facing tough choices in a quest to slash the national debt, the report from the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), a left-leaning Washington think tank, quickly hit a nerve.

After reading it, Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings, ranking member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, called for hearings on executive compensation.

In a letter to that committee's chairman, Republican Darrell Issa, Cummings asked "to examine the extent to which the problems in CEO compensation that led to the economic crisis continue to exist today."

He also asked "why CEO pay and corporate profits are skyrocketing while worker pay stagnates and unemployment remains unacceptably high," and "the extent to which our tax code may be encouraging these growing disparities."

Bezos-Funded Spaceship Misfires

"An unmanned spaceship funded by Internet billionaire Jeff Bezos veered out of control and had to be destroyed during a recent test flight, highlighting the dramatic risks of private space ventures.

The spacecraft, developed by closely held Blue Origin LLC, was on a suborbital flight from the company's West Texas spaceport last week when ground personnel lost normal contact with the vehicle. Investigators are looking at remnants of the craft recovered on the ground to determine the cause.

After The Wall Street Journal reported on the failure, Blue Origin Friday posted a brief note on its website stating the spacecraft, while going faster than the speed of sound, suffered a "flight instability" at an altitude of 45,000 feet and the company's automated "range safety system" shut off all thrust and led to its destruction.

The note, signed by Mr. Bezos, said it was "not the outcome any of us wanted," but "we're signed up for this to be hard."

The mishap, which industry officials said occurred last Wednesday, dealt a potentially major blow to the ambitions of Mr. Bezos, the founder and chief executive of Amazon.com Inc., to develop a reliable system for blasting tourists and astronauts out of the atmosphere.

The failure also could set back White House plans to promote commercially developed spacecraft to transport crews to the international space station by the second half of this decade.

Yesterday:

If you get a chance read Froggi Donna's account of their America's 911 Foundation memorial ride to honor those lost on 9/11 in Shanksville PA, at the Pentagon and World Trade Center.   http://2takinga5th.blogspot.com/2011/09/10th-anniversary-ride-to-remember-911.html

It brought me to tears again, even after 10 years.  My late DH Johnnie was still alive then, very sick, but alive.

I remember that morning well, it was so hard to believe that it was really happening.   Then, in less than 2 months Johnnie was gone, too.

Miniature Pinsher

Jay and I had already agreed to work.  He was at the doctor's the day before.

Misty had a good walk-about when we went to pick him up, and even met a little Min-Pin.

We got several things knocked off the To-Do List.

First we had to take the duffle bags that I had brought down for someone to choose one to buy, back up to my attic. That person never showed up.  I am keeping them for now, as they have come in handy before.

Hall-1Most of the things that I have for sale are kept in my hall, as that is the only place where the cats don't go.  Mostly to keep them from playing with the items, but some people are allergic.  I have to keep computer-type stuff for sale there, too, as it can't be out in the storeroom.

The un-reupholstered foam cushions for the cargo trailer are there too, to keep the cats away from them, so the stack on the hall's bookcase was really high.

I had an inquiry about the exact measurements of an RV water heater door that I have for sale, but I had to find it.    First Jay had to get all those cargo trailer cushions out of the way.

Then we boxed up some clothes that I didn't want anymore that had been put in the hall, sealed the boxes with tape to keep dirt dobbers out, and took them up to the 'Yard Sale Dept.' in the guest house attic.  We moved all the coffee makers that I had bought, before I settled on the Kitchen-Aid one, and put them in the store room.  Now we could see what was in the hall, and found the water heater door and frame.

While I was on the phone for half an hour dealing with Jay's cell phone carrier, Net 10, he cut a piece of thin plywood to zip-tie on to the top of the cat's cage in the dining area.

His only cost to have that phone is to buy $20 worth of minutes, (200 minutes) a month online, but he has to do it by a certain date each month, or the phone is de-activated.  Then he gets me to go through all the rigmarole of getting it re-activated.  He hardly ever uses the phone, so now he has over 800 minutes to use up!

If the kittens had jumped up on that cage, they could have got a leg caught, and broken it.  BTDT!

It didn't take long for Precious to take a nap up there.

With this drought, my house has shifted a smidgeon, and one of the sliding mirrored closet doors was difficult to open and made a screeching sound.  Jay adjusted it, as it was at the top, and I couldn't reach it.

A 'free' Premiere account for a year with www.bookoo.com comes with the purchase of a decal for $5.00 if it is displayed on a car.  This saves a fee of $8.00 a month for a Premiere account so that you can post more than one picture of your item for sale, and have the ad in bold. The Puddle Jumper gets this 'honor', so we applied the new decal, took the picture and submitted it to Bookoo.  The decal is slightly different each year.

Tropical Storm Lee is impacting Louisiana:

"Governors in Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as the mayor of New Orleans, declared states of emergency. Officials in several coastal Louisiana communities called for voluntary evacuations. Sandbags were being distributed in some Louisiana parishes.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said he was concerned about the serious threat of flash flooding in his state, leading to his emergency action. After devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, nothing is taken for granted.

Louisiana needs rain -- just not that much, that fast. Both Texas and Louisiana have been suffering through drought. New Orleans, which was least affected by the drought, already was being pelted by sporadic rain. More of a problem is a stubborn marsh fire that has blanketed the city with smoke, though the rain will help extinguish it.

"Louisiana can wipe out their drought completely with this one storm," Yanez said.

"Sometimes you get what you ask for," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. "Unfortunately it looks like we're going to get more than we needed.""

They don't want all that rain there, but we are on the "Lee"-ward side,  http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/weather/090211-rain-packed-ts-lee-won't-hit-texas so it is unlikely to share any with us today.

Do You Want Rice With That? Lots of Recipes. Pet Food.

For "Foody Friday:"
"There are many things in our society today that have a bad reputation...politicians, car salesmen, and carbohydrates.
But, you know that not all carbs are the same and we do not need to be pointing the nasty blame finger on all of them equally.

White Rice vs. Brown Rice and every other rice on the shelf.

If you've ever even spent 2 minutes in the rice aisle at your local grocery store, you know the varieties and the choices of rice are endless.   Are any of these a good option?
Brown Rice goes on the top of the "good" list (oh come on, you knew I was going to say that, right?)
Many people know brown rice is better than white, but why?
Well, although brown rice and white rice have similar amounts of calories, carbohydrates, and protein. The main difference between the two forms of rice is in the processing and nutritional content.

Only the outermost layer of a grain of rice (the husk) is removed in producing brown rice. To produce white rice, the next layers underneath the husk (the bran layer and the germ) are removed, leaving mostly the starchy endosperm.
Several vitamins and dietary minerals are lost when you remove this very important layer (especially Vit B1, Vit B3 and iron). Not to mention magnesium, where one cup of cooked brown rice contains 84mg of magnesium and one cup of white rice only contains 19 mg.

Another very important source of nutrition that is lost in white rice is fiber! This is so vital because fiber plays so many important roles in the weight loss process.
Fiber helps you to feel full for a longer period of time and if you are not hungry and feel satisfied, it's much easier to stick to your healthy eating than if you are starving all day.
Fiber also helps to control blood sugar fluctuations and the secret to weight loss is keeping your blood sugar and your insulin under control all day long.
Fiber helps your digestion. If you are not eliminating and moving your bowels each day, weight loss will be extremely difficult. I would even say for some people, impossible.

Speaking of keeping your blood sugar in balance...we should also consider the glycemic index (how a particular food affects your blood sugar) when considering our rice options. An easy test you can do right in your kitchen to test the glycemic index of a particular variety of rice is the "stickiness" test.
After you've cooked the rice, the easier it is to mush up into a ball (mushy), the higher the glycemic index and the faster it will cause your blood sugar to rise. This is why long grain brown rice is actually better than short grain brown rice...it will cause a slower rice in your blood sugar and in insulin levels.

How about every other rice option out there?   Here are just a few...

Basmati Rice Used in a wide range of Indian and Middle Eastern dishes, basmati rice comes in white and brown varieties. I suggest choosing the brown as the glycemic index of brown basmati rice is even lower than regular long grain brown rice. This one gets thumbs up.

Black Rice Cultivated in Asia, this rice is typically sold as an unmilled rice, meaning the fiber-rich black husks of the rice are not removed, making black rice very high in fiber. It's also naturally high in iron...a plus for those looking for iron-rich foods. This one gets thumbs up.

Jasmine Jasmine rice is frequently served with Thai and Chinese dishes. It is often compared to Basmati Rice and sometimes used in cooking interchangeably. Like basmati rice, it also comes in brown and white varieties. You probably already know what I'm going to say here (but I'll say it anyway), choose the brown rice variety. This one gets thumbs up.

Wild Rice Similar to brown rice, wild rice is less processed than white rice and as a result, obtains more nutrients, specifically protein, vitamin B1 and magnesium. Not quite as much of a winner as brown rice, but not the same as white rice, wild rice falls somewhere in between. Even so...it still gets a thumbs up.

Which rice options get the thumbs down?
White rice, instant rice (especially the ones that go in the microwave), rice bowls (highly processed) and any other rice product that has added creams, sauces or tons of sodium.
Now, with all of this talk about glycemic index and sugar balance, you must remember the most important thing...
The glycemic index of a food changes drastically when combined with other foods. So regardless of your rice choice, it is essential that you combine your rice (a carb) with a healthy protein and fat.

Depending on your specified portion sizes, a ½ cup to a cup of brown rice can be a wonderful carbohydrate choice in your lunch or dinner alongside a tasty protein (maybe some wild fish) and some yummy vegetables (possibly some sautéed spinach).

Wow...did I really spend this much time on rice? Oh boy. And there are still so many other healthy grains to talk about."
_______________

Four Cheap and Healthy Grains

"We all know that cooking meals at home can save money. For some (like me), it’s a lot of fun, too, but it’s easy to get in a rut — which is where I found myself last year.
Brown rice was my go-to side dish, but there are only so many ways to cook the stuff before your taste buds get bored. That’s when I discovered a whole new world of grains that got me excited to cook again, many of which are now kitchen staples. If you’re ready for something new, try out these under-appreciated grains, each with a distinct texture and flavor.
Barley
Before combat, Roman gladiators ate barley, which was believed to give great strength and stamina. Non-gladiators can just enjoy it for its rich, nut-like flavor and health benefits. Barley is a good source of fiber, selenium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese.
Barley is often thrown into a beef stew, but it is certainly worthy to be a dish all on its own. Try Barley Stew with Leeks, Mushrooms, and Greens or Barley Salad.
Kasha
Kasha is roasted whole-grain buckwheat or buckwheat oats and is commonly eaten in Eastern Europe (though in Slavic countries, the word kasha refers to porridge in general). Kasha is close to wheat in its nutrition content, though it’s gluten-free, and is high in protein, B vitamins, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and calcium.
Kasha is cooked the same way as rice, and it’s just as versatile. For a couple of ideas, try Wild Mushroom and Onion Kasha or Kasha with Browned Onions and Walnuts.
Millet
In the US, millet is most often recognized as the main ingredient in bird seed. But millet isn’t just for the birds; it’s a staple grain in Africa, India, and Asia.
Millet is high in protein—1/2 cup of cooked millet provides 4.2 grams. It is also rich in niacin, B6, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Like kasha, millet is a good option for those with gluten allergies.
To start cooking with millet, try out Curried Millet, Shiitake, and Corn Salad Restey or keep it simple with Hot Millet Cereal.
Quinoa
Quinoa (pronounced keen-wa) isn’t actually a grain, but I had to include it anyway, and I’ve saved my favorite for last. While it is commonly thought of as a grain, it’s more closely related to leafy greens, such as spinach and chard.
Quinoa, however, is grown for its seeds, not its greens. Quinoa is a 5,000-year-old crop that was a diet staple for the Andean Incas, who referred to it as “chisaya mama,” or “mother of all grains.” It has a light, soft texture and a delicately nutty flavor when cooked.
Quinoa is full of nutritional value, containing all of the essential amino acids and more protein than grains. It is a good source of dietary fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, vitamin E and several B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. Quinoa also is another gluten-free option.
One of my favorite recipes for quinoa comes from La Tartine Gourmande, a gorgeous food blog by Béatrice Peltre. (And by gorgeous, I mean that if it was possible to live inside a blog, I’d live in hers.) Béatrice was kind enough to provide the beautiful photos in this article and to let me share her black quinoa salad recipe on GRS. So, to get you started on some culinary experimentation, here is Béatrice’s quinoa recipe. Feel free to experiment and make it your own!

Black quinoa salad with ricotta salata and green zebra tomatoes

Ingredients:
  • 2/3 cup black quinoa
  • 2 oz ricotta salata, diced
  • 1 oz finely grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 avocado, diced
  • 2 green zebra tomatoes
  • 3.5 oz French green beans
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander
  • 10 cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red grapes
For the vinaigrette:
  • 1 garlic clove, minced finely
  • 1 teaspoon honey Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
Steps:
  1. Rinse the quinoa under cold water and drain. Add to a pot with twice the same amount of water (2 x 2/3 cup water). Add salt and bring to a boil. Simmer and cover.
  2. Cook for 15 minutes or until all the water is absorbed. Stop the heat and let rest for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and let cool. Transfer to a large bowl; set aside.
  3. To prepare the vinaigrette, in a small bowl, combine the garlic and honey mustard with the balsamic vinegar. Add the oil and emulsify with a fork. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Prepare the other ingredients: Cook the French beans for 5 minutes in salted boiling water. Rinse them under cold water; cut them in 2.5 inch-sticks and set aside.
  5. Slice the cherry tomatoes and red grapes in halves and the zebra tomatoes in quarters.
  6. Combine all ingredients (quinoa, tomatoes, beans, avocado, ricotta, grapes, parmesan, and herbs) in the bowl and dress with the vinaigrette. Serve at room temperature or fresh.
Serves two.
Note: Most quinoa comes pre-rinsed to remove the saponin, which is a natural, but bitter, resin-like coating. It’s a good idea to give it an extra rinse in cold water before cooking it, as recommended in this recipe."
__________

The Basic Quinoa Recipe

"This light and wholesome grain may be prepared quickly and easily with this basic method.   2 cups water + 1 cup quinoa.
Place quinoa and water in a 1-½ quart saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook until all the water is absorbed (about 15 minutes).

You will know that the quinoa is done when all the grains have turned from white to transparent, and the spiral-like germ has separated. Makes 3 cups.

To prepare in a rice cooker, simply treat quinoa like rice. Add two parts water to one part quinoa, stir, cover (unlike rice you can stir quinoa a few times while cooking to prevent burning in the bottom of the pan) and when the cooker shuts off, the quinoa is done.

Revised Microwave Instructions:  We have tried this method and highly recommend it. 1 cup Quinoa, 2 cups water in a 2 quart microwave bowl. Cook on high 100% for 5 minutes and 60% for 8 minutes. Let stand for a few minutes and voila, perfect Quinoa.  The times might depend on the wattage of your MW.

For an energy saving method, combine 1-cup water to each ½ cup of quinoa in a pan. Bring to a full boil for 5 minutes, and then set aside, covered for 15 minutes.
For additional flavor
, substitute chicken broth or vegetable stock for the water in any of the methods listed above. "

Why are Refined Grain Products Harmful?

"Refined grains and their food products are substandard foods for several reasons:
  1. They are excessively starchy and high in gluten.
  2. They are practically devoid of natural fiber.
  3. There can be up to approximately 25 different chemicals that are added to refined grains and breads products.
  4. Grains are fumigated.
  5. Bleaching chemicals are used.
  6. Artificial colorings and flavorings are used.
  7. They are nutritionally imbalanced.
Because refined grain products are nutritionally imbalanced, they are responsible for contributing to several degenerative diseases.
Calcium leaching from the bones and teeth occurs because of the altered phosphorous-calcium balance in these products.
Sugar and refined grain products are primarily responsible for tooth decay in this country, as well as being the major cause of brittle bones in the elderly."

Whole grains: Hearty options for a healthy diet, By Mayo Clinic staff

Find out why whole grains are better than refined grains and how to add more whole grains to your diet.

"Grains, especially whole grains, are an essential part of a healthy diet. All types of grains are good sources of complex carbohydrates and some key vitamins and minerals. Grains are also naturally low in fat. All of this makes grains a healthy option. Better yet, they've been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and other health problems.
The healthiest kinds of grains are whole grains. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that at least half of all the grains you eat are whole grains. Chances are you eat lots of grains already. But are they whole grains? If you're like most, you're not getting enough whole grains in your diet. See how to make whole grains a part of your healthy diet.

Types of grains

Also called cereals, grains and whole grains are the seeds of grasses cultivated for food. Grains and whole grains come in many shapes and sizes, from large kernels of popcorn to small quinoa seeds.
Whole grains. These are unrefined grains that haven't had their bran and germ removed by milling. Whole grains are better sources of fiber and other important nutrients, such as selenium, potassium and magnesium. Whole grains are either single foods, such as brown rice and popcorn, or ingredients in products, such as buckwheat in pancakes or whole wheat in bread.
Refined grains. Refined grains are milled, a process that strips out both the bran and germ to give them a finer texture and extend their shelf life. The refining process also removes many nutrients, including fiber. Refined grains include white flour, white rice, white bread and degermed cornflower. Many breads, cereals, crackers, desserts and pastries are made with refined grains, too.

Should I Eat Brown Rice Instead of White Rice?

About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by our Medical Review Board
brown rice
Question: Should I Eat Brown Rice Instead of White Rice?
What exactly is brown rice? Which is better for the body, brown rice or white rice?
Answer: Brown rice is rice that has not had the brown-colored bran covering removed, so brown rice is considered a whole grain. Why remove the bran? Because most people prefer white rice since it is fluffier and cooks faster than brown.
Since brown rice still has the bran intact, it has more fiber than white rice. One cup of brown rice has 3 1/2 grams of fiber while the same amount of white rice has less than one gram of fiber. We all need from 25 to 38 grams of fiber in our diet everyday.
Brown rice also contains nutrients like magnesium, manganese, and zinc. White rice has reduced levels of these nutrients.
Cooking Brown Rice
White rice is still the usual rice found in restaurants, so you will probably have to get most of your brown rice at home. Brown rice takes longer than white rice to cook, so increase the amount of water slightly.
Brown rice doesn't have the fluffy texture of white rice, but its nutty flavor and chewy texture makes brown rice a tasty way to get fiber into your diet.

Yesterday:

With my little vacuum, little mop, and little mop bucket poised to clean more of this house, the phone rang.  It was Roni, that gal down the street, wanting me to take her to our town to cash her SS check when it came in the mail at noon, and then take her to Conroe.  Our mail comes to mail boxes down by the pool, so we don't know when it arrives  Not wanting to get involved in one of her all-afternoon-fiascos again, I refused.

Then a call to the Social Security office was a test of patience.  You know the drill:
You walk around with a phone attached to your ear for ages, listening to loud irritating music, while letting the dog out, reading emails, making coffee, letting the dog back in, drinking coffee, going to the bathroom.  But you can't vacuum in case you don't hear them answer.  And you can't mop, in case the phone falls in the mop bucket!  Then when a real person eventually does come on the line, they can't tell you what you want to know, and say call your local office.  If the letter they sent me had said to call my local office, I would have done that in the first place!

Roni found out that the mail had run early, and begged me to take her to our little town.  So as I was out of eggs, I relented and took her.

Surprisingly, she didn't take long cashing her check, or going to the water company to pay her bill.
On the way home, a stop at Walker's feed store just north of town.  (Yes, the feed store on the freeway closed down, but we still have two more.)  This store sells eggs from the local farms, laid by chickens that run around like chickens should.
Roni wanted to stop there too, and she bought farm eggs, cheap dry dog and cheap dry cat food.  She also bought a case of 24 cans of dog food for $9.50, but I looked at the ingredients, and it had chicken by-products, poultry meal and meat by-products in it.
Transcript:
"Do you really know what your best friend is eating? Have you looked at ingredient panel behind your pet's food?
If the answer is no, then we will teach you what to look for and what to avoid in your pet's diet in 5 easy steps:
1, Avoid foods that have grains in the top 5 ingredients because the main ingredients should be proteins and meats.
2, Stay away from the word gluten. Think of it as "glue" and this "glue" covers your pet's intestines.
3, Now, search for the protein source. If it says "Meat By-product", "Chicken By-product" is bad.
4, You should also stay away from "Meat Meal" or "Poultry Meal"
5, Preservatives like BHA or BHT should not be in their food and Propylene glycol (also known as car antifreeze) should not be used as a taste enhancer.
Now, go on and search the food's labels."
____________

Roni offered me a couple of cans.  Well, I wasn't going to feed my Misty any of that canned food, and I took Roni took home.

The mop bucket and vacuum were patiently waiting for me, so I could carry on with my day.

Pre-prepare Tin Foil Meals for the Barbee

"A couple of our favorite foil-wraps can be prep-worked before pulling out, then on arrival, fire the grill and toss a packet on.
Go about the rest of your set-up business, and in a short time the appetizing aromas will signal the meal is ready. Best of all, there's not a lot of cleanup!
While traveling does bring out quite an appetite, once you land in camp at the end of a road day, who wants to fiddle around with a lot of meal prep hoopala? It's so much easier to cruise on into a McDoogies, but the nutrition is so questionable. Go some place with better nutrient values and less fat, you're apt to spend a bundle. What's the traveler to do?   Pull out the barbee and the tinfoil and let the meal almost fix itself.

Foil Wrapped Burger Bundles:
Toss a burger patty in the middle of a square of aluminum foil. Top it with slices of onion, potato, carrots, and chunks of celery. Dab on a small pat of margarine or butter, season with a pinch of garlic powder, and (if you have it) a few drops of "liquid smoke." Fold up the aluminum "bundle" to seal in the food good and tight. Poke the pack once with a fork and toss on the grill over medium heat. Cooking time will vary with the size and thickness of the hamburger patty, check it out at about 20 minutes, but may take longer. When the spuds can be poked easily, she's ready to eat. Be sure to keep the veggies on top, else they'll burn.  Alternatives? Surely: Ground turkey is a hit.

Painless Foiled Fish:
This is one of our favorites when traveling through Native Fishery areas when the folks are selling fresh salmon by the roadside. Starting with a good sized chunk of foil, lay the fish on the foil, skin side down. Butter the fish as you would a piece of toast and dash on lemon juice. Salt and pepper to taste. Wrap up the tin foil and fold over tight. Poke once with a fork and toss on the grill, medium fire. Thickness of the fish determines cook time: 10 minutes per inch at the thickest point a good starting point.

Alternatives?  Layer on mayonnaise instead.  Or olive oil.   Or apple sauce!  Wow! Clean Up: Toss the "pan" in the trash! "

Comment:   Friarjp said... "Great Idea! We have used it for years with the Boy Scouts. Each scout does his own cooking. Kids (and adults, too) love it. No cleanup. However, we do not poke a hole in the foil. You get better results with the meat and vegetables being steam cooked."
----------------

From Me: Don't forget to check the food with your food thermometer, before you eat it.  You don't want collywobbles!

How long can you keep canned food in your rig?

"Do your food storage lockers hold hidden contents that were placed there shortly after your rig rolled off the showroom floor? And one day you're boondocking mucho miles away from the nearest Safeway and have this enormous craving for artichoke hearts?   So you dig through your food stores and voila! you discover a can of these delectable treats. The can is a bit rusted and the label peeling off, but hey. They're still edible, right?
It does raise the question, just how long can we keep canned foods before they either go completely off the chart or turn into something not so delectable?
The good news is that most food authorities say canned food will last for two years and longer. Even the two year figure, though, is completely arbitrary. In reality, if the can's seal is not broken it can last for many years longer.

How much longer? There was a recent report of a canned meat opened after 118 years and it was fine (canned meats can last the longest). The age of the can is not the big decider--after all, how long are you going to keep cans in your RV? Five years, ten years? Doubtful. The cans will likely outlast your RV.

But to be safe, if you follow these storage hints on food you intend to store for emergencies, or when you're trying to stretch a couple more days into your boondocking trips, you can eliminate your food safety concerns.
  • Write the date of purchase on the top of the can with a permanent marker.
  • Store in cool dry compartment. We RVers have to deal with bigger temperature swings than at home, but the cooler you can keep the cans the less chance they will have of overheating.
  • Low acid foods (soups without tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, peas) will last longer than highly acidic food (tomatoes, fruit, and foods with a lot of vinegar in them).
  • Before using, inspect the can for dents (a can with a large dent can have a broken seal even if you can't see it), bulging (a bad sign--throw these out immediately), and leaking (also throw out).
  • Never eat canned food that has a strange odor, color, or flavor, or that spurts when it is opened. Chuck it.
  • The Food Reference website states: "Canned food retains its safety and nutritional value well beyond two years, but it may have some variation in quality, such as a change of color and texture. Canning is a high-heat process that renders the food commercially sterile. Food safety is not an issue in products kept on the shelf or in the pantry for long periods of time. In fact, canned food has an almost indefinite shelf life at moderate temperatures (75° F and below). Canned food as old as 100 years has been found in sunken ships and it is still microbiologically safe!"
In canned foods, preservatives are used to maintain quality. The canning process keeps it safe. If a product is correctly processed, it should remain safe until opened or the seal is broken. The U.S. Army has found that canned meats, vegetables and jam were in "excellent states of preservation" after 46 years. RV furnaces
"Are you kidding, Doc? Think about RV furnaces when it's 95-degrees outside? The short answer, of course, is yes! Now is the time to consider the maintenance aspects of your heating system. Just like it's a wise RVer who performs air conditioner maintenance in the winter, so is the RVer who performs the necessary maintenance on the RV furnace during the summer.
The last thing you want to do is wait until you actually need heat, only to find that the furnace is not up to snuff, right? Proactive preventive maintenance is one of the keys to successful RVing!

To learn what you can do to keep RV furnace issues from ruining your next fall or winter getaway, check out my consumer-oriented furnace maintenance recommendations. "Put some holding tank treatment in the gray water holding tanks too. When the gray tank is empty add some water, and the holding tank treatment, to the sink drains to help keep the gray water tank free of odors. I add some dishwashing liquid to the gray water tank periodically to assist with breaking down the grease and keep the holding tank clean."

Positive Attitude on Negative RV Rodent Problem
Worried about mice getting in your RV wiring?
"This is a common problem and can become expensive and frustrating very quickly next time you go to use your rig and find a mouse nest in your converter or on your engine block. Rodents are attracted to the coating on the many miles of wire that travel through a rig, creating electrical shorts. If that is not enough reason, they just plain like to chew stuff.

What you need to do is put that energy into a quick and easy recycling craft project. Get a couple 5 gallon plastic buckets, a few empty cans and a length of wire. Ones like coffee cans with lids work best.  Punch a hole in the bottom center of the can, and the top center of the lid.  String the wire through the holes and twist it off on both sides of the bucket top. Fill the bucket with RV antifreeze. (Or just soapy water.)
Spread some peanut butter on the cans and strategically place your new mouse trap in and/or around your rig. You can tape a stick up to the bucket to make it easy for any rodents that desire a little peanut butter.
They will step out on the cans which will quickly spin them off into the water/antifreeze solution and quickly drown. This is much more humane than poison, much quicker and continues to work all season, even if you are not there. "

Disabled RV? D-I-Y flasher system makes you visible

"The thought of a disabled RV, sitting helpless beside the road, isn’t a pleasant one. Compound the issue by making the breakdown at night and the idea is that much more unpalatable. Flipping on the hazard lights is a good idea, but imagine that your disabled rig is a travel trailer, and you need to take the towing vehicle away, leaving the trailer beside the road. Now your options for making your RV visible are reduced–no tow rig, no flashers.
With a small investment of time and a few bucks, you can construct a module that will allow you to disconnect your tow rig and let your trailer battery to flash its own running lights. Not just the tail lights – the tail lights plus the rig’s clearance lights, making your rig even more visible than if you were plugged into your tow vehicle and using the hazard flashers.
Parts required:
1- 7 pin RV socket (female)
2- crimp connectors, female blade style (size to match pins on flasher unit)
1- heavy duty 2 connector flasher unit (Grote 44810 or equivalent)
6″- 14 gauge stranded electrical wire (insulated)
Assembly:
Cut wire into two equal lengths.  Strip back insulation on one end each wire to meet requirements of crimp connector; at opposite end enough to place around screw connector on RV connector.  Crimp one connector on each wire.
Disassemble RV connector.  Attach one wire to the the #4 (”black”) connection.  It would be good to “flag” the wire connected to the #4 connection for easy identification.  Attach the other wire to the #6 (”green”) connector.  Reassemble RV connector, taking care that the innards of the connector go back into the shell of the RV connector in proper alignment.  The wires with their attached crimp connectors should be passed out through the rear end of the RV connector.  In our pictured wire assembly, we added ring terminals to the end of the wires, and we screwed the ring connectors to the appropriate points inside the RV connector.
Next, connect the spade connectors to the hazard flasher observing polarity.  The wire connected to the #4 terminal of the RV connector should connect to the “power” or “battery” side of the flasher; the wire connected to the #6 attaching to the “load” side of the flasher unit.
To finish up the module, use electrical tape to cover the exposed flasher unit pins and the crimp connectors. Tape the flasher unit to the side of the RV connector with a few rounds of electrical tape to keep it firmly in place.
Using the flasher module
Simply unplug the trailer connector from your tow unit, and the plug in the flasher module.  Provided you have a charged “house” battery in the RV (and it is directly connected the charge wire on the connector) your marker lights and tail lights will now flash brilliantly.
You may have already seen suggestions on simply plugging a hazard flasher directly into your trailer electrical connector.  Will it work?  Maybe–but for how long is another issue.  Heavy duty flasher units need correct polarity to work correctly.  For example, the Grote flasher unit sold by your friendly CarQuest dealer has a “load” and a power supply side.  Hook it up in reverse polarity it will work–but the company tells us it won’t last. The only way to “plug in” a flasher unit directly into a trailer connector and make the marker lights flash is to plug it in with reversed polarity.  While the Grote unit will flash for a while, but it will prematurely fail.  Other units may not work, or will self-destruct.
Another drawback of the “plug it in directly” method is ensuring that you do manage to plug it into the correct pin positions.  We don’t know about you, but fiddling around in the dark (in the rain, sleet, snow, etc.) with the potential of high speed traffic whizzing by, just isn’t an idea we relish."  http://www.rvtechtips.com/?p=280

RVing Tips:
Traveling with an RV on days with bad weather is not only stressful, it can be downright dangerous. Rain makes the road slick. Wind can blow you all over the place. Plan your schedule with enough leeway that you can sit back and let the weather calm down before hitting the road.

Don't use your cruise control on twisty, wet or icy roads. http://www.maine.gov/bgs/riskmanage/tipofthemonth/tip46.htm and: http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/wetroad.asp

If your RVing takes you fishing in salt water, rinse your hooks in fresh water and dry them before putting them away.

If you have a cash register receipt on your RV counter or table and it gets wet, and the ink transfers and leaves a stain, try removing it with ordinary rubbing alcohol.

If you travel with a thermos bottle of coffee or tea with you, you've probably come across the dilemma of how to get the stains out of the bottom of the bottle. Here are two solutions. Fill the thermos partway with water. Then, add either a couple Alka Seltzer tablets or denture cleaning tablets. Let the solution set for an hour or so to work.

While all the bells and whistles on a fancy RV may be fun, a more basic RV is less expensive to buy, is usually easier and less expensive to maintain, has fewer things to breakdown, and when it does break down is usually easier and less expensive to fix.

Yesterday:

One thing that bugged me about my 'new' KitchenAid 4-cup Coffee Maker was that when you poured the coffee out of the carafe, it would dribble on the counter.  It makes excellent coffee, as the water temperature is different from regular coffee makers, so I wanted to keep it.
Internet to the rescue….I looked at the reviews and found out that others have had this problem, and the solution is to partly open the hinged top when pouring.  It worked.  Why did it take me so long to find that out!

The kittens were drinking out of a hanging plastic water bowl in their big cage, and I knew this was bad.  See:   http://gofetchgifts.com/blog/pet-health/is-your-pets-food-bowl-creating-a-toxic-meal/
Also when they were let loose in the house they would go straight to drink out of one of the enamelware water dishes throughout the house.

PETCO Plastic Bird Cage Cups
The hanging one was put in there so they wouldn't spill their water.  We use those for the display cages on Adoption Day, as they are only there for four hours twice a month.
Quite-content-in-their cage

I knew I had to find something better.  I found a big wide-based blue china bowl, so I hope they can't tip it over, or won't dunk their toys in it.
They don't play in their cage, as they know that they will be loose in the house for most of the day.  They scamper all over and then settle down for a nap. Pebbles, Prime,Precious taking a nap.

But Pebbles knocked down one of my crystal glasses off the back-lit shelf, and broke it.
They were steadied with poster putty, but now I will have to get some museum gel.
Crystal
My van must have thought I had abandoned it, as I hadn't been anywhere for days.   The kittens needed more canned food as they weren't crazy about what I had bought them at Kroger's the other day.
Also, I hadn't had a cup of my usual brand of coffee for a few days, as I was so disgusted at the new price raise that I bought a cheaper one.  Of course it didn't taste as good.  I really enjoy a couple of cups of good-tasting coffee first thing in the mornings, that's my special time.

Really, I just needed to get out of the house, so I thought I would drive the four miles to the new Kroger store.  Jay wanted to go with me.  At least we got some air- conditioned exercise as that store is so big, and we don't know where everything is yet.  The afternoon temperature wasn't in the 100's as it has been, it was down to 99° !
They were still offering samples of fruit, meat and cheese.  One meat sample, 'Boar's Head Jerk Turkey' was really spicy, so Jay warned me to stay away from it.  But I try to stay away from processed foods anyway.

This time I bought a better brand of canned cat food, so the kittens are happier now.  Still not what they really wanted, they prefer good organic canned cat food, they know what's good for them.

But I just didn't feel like driving to Conroe's Petco or Petsmart, as I will be there on Saturday anyway for Adoption Day.
