Recycle Pantyhose & Cut Hair, Fur. Mother's Day.

50,000 Pairs Of Pantyhose To Help Soak Up Oil

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Winston-Salem-based Hanesbrands Inc. is donating 50,000 pairs of pantyhose to be used to make oil-absorbing hair booms to fight the Gulf Coast oil spill.
The pantyhose will be stuffed with human and animal hair to make booms that will absorb and trap the oil, the company said Thursday afternoon. The oil is then squeezed out of the boom, which can then be reused to collect more oil.
"We were fascinated to learn of this other use for pantyhose," said Chris Fox, vice president of corporate social responsibility for Hanesbrands Inc. "This is yet another way that we can contribute to environmental responsibility. We are happy to quickly redirect pantyhose scheduled to be recycled so that it can be used to combat an unfortunate environmental threat."
The pantyhose are being donated to nonprofit and grassroots volunteer groups.
"We are collecting hair and pantyhose from throughout the country to make 1 million hair booms over the next three weeks," said Jeff Golden, vice president and co-founder of The Sunshine and Shores Foundation in Destin, Fla. "Hair acts as a sponge. When you put these booms in oil-polluted water, they absorb the oil and leave the water crystal clear."
Golden said the booms can be reused more than 100 times each.
"You put the booms in the water to absorb the oil and then squeegee the oil out of them in an oil barge to recycle the oil," he said.
Here is a cute video about it:

Who knew that we could help this effort by sending our cut hair, our animal's cut hair, and old pantyhose to 'A Matter of Trust' at:

"Have your pet groomed by your regular groomer or at your local PETCO

If you use your regular groomer, ask them to collect all the clippings and put them in a plastic storage bag (if you have your pet groomed at PETCO they will automatically do this for you)

Drop your pet's fur/hair clippings off at your local PETCO grooming salon; or

Note added:   "5/23/10 please note: We need nylons for the Gulf, but we are not accepting hair from new sign ups till we work through the tons that we have. All new sign ups are in the RESERVES till further notice."
