Another company who buys HVP from Basic Foods has their own recall, too:

Nearly everything has been affected by this recall from Basic Food Flavors, Inc.
“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to protect the public following the early identification of Salmonella in one company’s supply of a common processed food ingredient called hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP).
What is HVP?
“HVP is a substance used in small amounts to add flavor to many commercially processed foods, such as soups, hot dogs, chilies, stews, dips, salad dressings, gravies, frozen dinners, and snack foods”.
Here is a list and it is a pretty long one: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/
FDA Recalls HVP, Which We Shouldn’t Eat Anyway
“Does anybody else think it’s strange that we’re wolfing down tons of chemical gunk that’s boiled up in a manufacturing plant in Vegas?
Say what you will about organic food, but weird junk like HVP, MSG, and all their freakish ingredient-list friends, like FD&C Yellow, just can’t be good for us. They’re literally concocted in labs and dumped into vats of chemical goo from which our “food” is stamped into marketable forms. And, of course, these things are laden with useless calories.
According to the Basic Food Flavors website “Whether your requirement is liquid, paste, vacuum dried granules, spray dried powder, or IP certified non-GMO, Basic Food Flavors produces it.”
Compare that to a sweet potato, or some corn on the cob. What would you rather stick in your mouth?
So I have a good idea: Why don’t we take diligent notes on what the FDA puts on its upcoming recall list, and then quit eating all of that stuff, for now and forever. All these recalled processed foods were bad enough before they had salmonella in them.

Ray and I got the kitchen cabinet moved, and retrieved my grandmother’s spice chart. All the stuff, mostly small kitchen appliances, is back in the cabinet. It was lot of stuff as we had installed half shelves for smaller stuff over the regular shelves. The counter top is just about finished, but we found out that we have to cut a smidgeon off the kitchen trim to make fit right.
My hand is still very swollen and sore, so I need to soak it in salt or Epsom salts or something.
We still needed a sweater, but it was a very nice day.

Very interesting and informative post about HVP. I rarely buy anything processed and use mostly fresh of everything. Just when I think how easy it would be to use a mix or package of something, I read the label and it scares me enough to put the item back on the shelf!
HVP has gluten in it so we don't eat it!
